A Cigar Box Guitar Builder's Guide to Stringing and Tuning

There is a wide variety of music played by utilizing Open Tunings: Hawaiian, Blues, Banjo, etc. Considering an Open Tuning really only requires three notes to make a chord, reducing a standard guitar or banjo down to 3 or 4 strings is not very difficult.

Thank you Hannibal for your comment. I made this video to help new builders make better functional instuments. Open tuning is a real early method of stringing that works fantastic on these simple little creations. I am glad to hear you found the information helpful. Enjoy your build, Keni Lee

How to read guitar tabs

Thank you Skinny Dean for your purchase. Learning to read tablature is relatively easy compared to the traditional method of writing music. Tablature is more of a visual picture of how the music appear on your fingerboard. Here is a link to a page teaching how to read tab. If you have further question, please feel free to write. Once you learn to read tab, you will have access to a lot of music. Enjoy.

Keni Lee,
I have recently purchased your DVD "How to Play 3 String Cigar Box Guitar" and being very much a novice player and not knowing how to read music need some clarification. In lesson 2 you explain the various scales, ie Penatonic, Chromatic, Monotonic, etc and each comes with a chart at the end. I need help in understanding the charts so I practice correctly. I assume the numbers across the top are the frets, but what do the double lines at the bottom mean? On the monotonic and alternating bass scales there are vertical dashes and zeros on the horizontal lines - what do these denote?

Any info you can pass on or additional reference materials you or anyone else can point me towards is greatly appreciated.

Building my own 3 string was a great project. Now I need to learn how to play. The video is excellent but I don't have enough (any) musical background to understand what I need to.

Thanks for your help and everyone else.

Dean
