I have a question. I have seen some fretted necks that are a solid neck and doesn't have a fretboard.So, is a fretboard necessary? .

No, but harder woods are better for this style, some softer woods will want to let go of the frets over time. I have had success with Red & White Oak, Maple & Walnut in this style, I had to glue 2 or 3 frets back down using Lowe’s Poplar 1x2’s? Let us know how it comes out :)
