"Give youself a break and do not over think the build. For example the first Les Paul electric guitar was a wooden 2x4 with strings and hand wound pickups. Build the shovel guitar, keep the distance between the nut and bridge around 25”.…"

"Good to know they are available. Really wanted others to know and look out for the plastic handle ones because I don't think they will hold up well with a few tuners mounted to them under string pressure. Damage waiting to happen. Haha"

"They’re out there Paul, you just have shovel out more money, Home Depot in my area carries the “Razorback “ brand with a metal & wood handle. Not cheap tho "

"All the shovels I've seen have plastic handle brackets on the end. I'd rather have metal so an older shovel may have to be found and purchased unless you know where to find a new one with metal handle brackets. "

"I believe the spade he uses is a Bluehawk. Which just happens to be 50% off at Lowes through October 15th. I am planning to build one as well and 7 bucks for a spade is a no brainer. Plus is can get a extra for the garden."

"For your tuners, a piece of aluminium 1/2" thick screwed or riveted to your handle will stiffen the plastic handle and make it better for mounting the tuners, or even a strip of good wood, if you can spread the load of the tuner along that…"

"If you want a fret mark to line up with a certain place on the instrument body ( whether shovel, cigar box, pumpkin, etc ) .. you'd have to work backwards - measure from that place on the instrument the distance from that fret ( or a fret ) and…"
