"Beautiful work all the way around Bruce! I never weigh in on how to build - starts too many bar fights - but you seem to want to maximize acoustic volume and mentioned you build your neck level to the body. If I read that right, I strongly suggest…"

Paul Craig replied to Rough Cut Tom's discussion Dulci-tar stringing: wound or plain 'a'
"I had an old plywood Strat body and decided to make a conversion neck for it with Diatonic fretting. It's now a 28" Baritone scale and with the Diatonic fretting, it has 3 octaves. I use a 6 string set of 10's tuned C/G/C/G/C/C. I can…"

Dulci-tar stringing: wound or plain 'a'

Hey all! Going down the rabbit hole (a trip I take often) of string weights and hope to bring some of you along with me this time :-) Recently finished a dulci-tar build for a customer who requested 6-1/2 and 13-1/2 frets with 3 strings 'Dad' tuning. Feeling like we missed out on the full-on chime of the double 'dd' course strings on top, I've decided to go for another. Inspired by the 'half fret' notion (new to me - I'm a guitar guy) I decided to go chromatic fretting and four strings with the…See More

Cookie Tin Banjo - Magpie

"The tone is amazing Jim - fantastic work! I'm guessing the mahogany tempers the strident nature of the synthetic head and tin. All-maple would probably put it off the brashness scale. I wonder if Walnut would still keep it on the warm side -…"

Hi Tom. I don't use glue on the tack heads. I pre drill the tack holes about 3/4 of the tack length. I want the tacking to be gentle on the bowl. I get very tight heads with no slippage. I'm going to try glue on one using the hose clamp method. I'll make my own body for that to suit the clamp. I do glue in tacks that don't hold with super glue. I get a few of them due to too deep pre drilling. Hope this helps.

Hi Tom, I thought we were friends on here already!

I'm using the EADG strings from a  string and tuning down slightly on the top and bottom. This neck has a steel rod for strength. TBH the quarter sawn oak I use for my necks is mega strong. It can easily support 4 strings without any strengthening!
