ChickenboneJohn replied to Bruce Young's discussion A method for grounding strings without metal bridge or tailpiece
"Simply earth one ferrule and use a bridge with a fretwork or bolt saddle - that's what I do. Keep it nice 'n' simple. e."

ChickenboneJohn replied to Frank Scott's discussion Neck with built in Fret Board ? Advice Needed
"It will probably handle the string tension providing you don't tune too high for any given weight of strings, I've done this plenty of times with oak and sapele, but poplar is generally way too soft to fret directly into. It is very easy…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Don Stachovak's discussion Advice wanted - someone else's guitar
"Tell them straight what's wrong with it. On the few occasions there's been a problem with my guitars (maybe 4 or 5 in the course of 1500 guitars), my customer has told me, I've sorted it out and I've learned from the experience.…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Frank Scott's discussion String Gauges -3 string ?
"What gauge you choose depends on what tuning you go for...you can still put a lot of load on a neck with light gauge strings if they are tuned high.  I use 046, 030, 022 for GDG tuning . With a .016 on the top you'd be looking at something…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Christopher's discussion Fret size
"Fret size doesn't really make a huge difference in terms of playability, but I find wider fretwire easier to install, so most of our guitars use medium or jumbo fretwire (2-2.5mm wide), and I also like the Van Gent super jumbo (about 2.7mm…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Frank Scott's discussion Neck positon to box?
"The bowing the neck is really too much. Leave the neck where it enters the box the same, that looks OK but you've got the right idea if the the neck is "diving" towards the tailpiece, then you can raise the packing  block or…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Frank Scott's discussion Neck positon to box?
"It looks like there's something fundamentally wrong with the way the neck is fixed into that guitar - the strings look a good 1/2 inch above the top of the box where they pass over the end of fretboard, yet the bolt bridge only looks like…"

Summer of '18 - Life On The Road

Posted on August 11, 2018 at 3:54am 2 Comments

So...summer's well on, and it's been an amazingly warm one...and for me an exhausting one.   I know people think that being a professional musician is one long round of cool gigs, adulation, alcohol and drugs...but there's more...and less to it than that. Finding the cash for many tanks of diesel, worrying about whether there's a parking place near the gig, figuring out the logistics of loading out 500kg  of gear every night and keeping it safe, and not getting busted by the German Autobahn…

Back On The Road - Autumn European Tour

Posted on September 26, 2017 at 9:00am 2 Comments

It had been a while, but it was time for me and Hollowbelly to go back on he road again…the Van Thom Weekender and the German Cigar Box Guitar Festival were happening on two consecutive weekends, so that was the cue to arrange a little tour. We had a contact from a new promoter offering a midweek date between the two weekends, and I managed to arrange some more dates on the way out and back, so we had a viable tour organised. Getting gigs is one thing, but getting shows that pay and work…

  • GLASTONBURY 2017

After last year's success selling cigar box guitars at Glastonbury, we decided to have another shot at it. My sales manager (and daughter) Anne completed the application in October of last year...and early in March we heard that we'd been offered…

Just happened to see the video of your tilt neck CBG's. That is plain awesome thinking and design. Like your idea over the Fender design.

Good to know you Chickenbone. Just been checking out your "Jitterbug Swing" , liked Bukka White for eons and your version is ace. How did you come to buy The Works entire UK stock of BBG's? How much are you selling them for?

Definitely not your fault mate. Postie put a missed delivery slip through the door without bothering to knock. Then when I tried to collect it from the post office they looked for 20 minutes then said they'd lost it. Then after I rode to work they called to say they'd found it...

Hi John, after a bit of a nightmare with the Post Office (long story) I finally received the fretboard blanks from you this morning. They're wonderful, thanks very much! Cheers for the offcuts too!

Hey, CBJ, many apologies, have only just found your message re tailpieces.

yes I still need one, but most of the ones i've seen are for full sized resonators, and are too long. I only need a max of 3ins long , which was about the size of the USA one I commented on.

Regards SJ
