I thanks for the feedback about the "V" joint you use to attach your necks to your sound boxes. I was wondering which surfaces you glue together. The base of the neck includes a slot which has the "male" part of the "V" joint and the neck-side of the cigar box has the "female" part of the "V" joint, so I'm pretty sure you glue together those mating surfaces. Then, to make the base of the neck-to-box joint even stronger, I assume you glue the side reinforcement "beams" to the neck, and probably both the sound board and the back board (at least where the neck comes into contact with them. Is the resulting joint particularly strong? Why do you employ it? Inquiring minds like mine want to know!
Also, I have already set up a group discussion up on my discussion group called Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0. I have included 2 photos of your V-joint and a photo of your Guinness tin guitar which used the dove joint. Both of these methods of attachin a neck have been classified under the category I call "Set-in necks", which include the various mortise & tenon methods employed in real guitar making. I'd like to get more feedback from you on your V Joint (or whatever you call it) so I can add to the content there. Thanks.
Black Beauty is strictly electric, but the box is all wood.
sound holes were planned, as was a recessed jack plate, but I liked the way it looked, so I
decided to omit them for cosmetic reasons. I prefer to keep my guitars as simple and un-cluttered as possible. This one gets added to my collection. Looks good next to my ovation breadwinner and my martin acoustic. I would keep them all if my wife would let me!!!!!
My dad has made a new head stock and has glued it onto the neck, and I like the idea of brass eye screws as string trees! Thanks for the advice! I am putting up a picture of the unfinished headstock soon
Sound advice my friend, however I've a feeling that it'll fall on deaf ears. I've just had a look at some of your photos. There's some sweet craftsmanship going on there.
It now has it's voice and I'm trying to get the best sound. At the moment it's got a great loud rock'n'roll sound which is nice as the humbucker is working it's magic with the overdrive.
I'm trying to get that certain blues sound from it, so I guess it'll be more trying and bust strings for me.
Hi Again...yes you are right, I never thought of that, a bit late now but I am in the process of gathering the bits for a CBG so I might just do that to the inside. On a side note the home page for the CGNation will not let me join the chat now...it did when I first joined but now, even if I sign into that page the chat boxs are empty??? Not to sure how these computers work but???
Yes I have access to a planer and could have made a thin solid top but you are right in thinking I was looking for durability...and also being on the boat I have a big problem with humidity...mostly close to 80% and when the fog rolls in everything is dripping outside...then on a summers day it can send the humidity to desert like numbers...so the 1/8" birch ply is earning it's livin'
I bet it is, the three string acoustic i built is really loud, took it over to a friends house who has an old 70's era Martin and played 'em side by side. It was very humbling, but considering the size of my acoustic and of course the shape, i'm still very pleased with how it turned out. I will be making alot more in the future. Did you pre load the top and back, if not check out how I made my go-bar system. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help ya out.
If you go to pictures and type in Shark Bite in the search box, it will display two pictures. One is a closeup of the guitar and the other is a picture of my friend playing it. There are other pictures but you would have to sift through the many pictures on this site to find the others.
ha, we went camping with the 'kids' near kielder water at a forest park last august bank holiday, you'll be gratified to know that we didn't have visas- but on day 2 a terrific wind got up and completely destroyed our tent.. ha
I was curious what box that was. Was it some type of Guiness gift pack? Is it plastic or metal? The brass tailpiece looks really nice, did you find that somewhere, or is it made from scratch? Did you put a piezo inside? I assume that is just a volume only control?
Welcome aboard, Michael! You will find lots of helpful folks and information here on all things CBG (CBU, CBB, etc.) Feel free to poke around, ask questions, and post your stuff (photos, recordings, videos, etc.).
Up in the Free Resources menu at the top, you will see a number of plans for building and playing cigar box guitars/ukuleles/banjos/dulcimers/violins. I encourage you to download any of the plans, take a look at them, and ask questions from there. Also our site is VERY searchable. I bet you your questions have already been asked, so take a few moments and look around.
