Hi.

I came across a CBN posting you had made back in 2010 about the song 'Freight Train', asking for diatonic tabs... I happen to be working on a set of tabs for the song, but as is frequently the case, I'm having a few problems matching the lyrics to the notes, especially on additional verses. I'll include what I have so far, and if you have come up with you own tabs, maybe you can show me... they may help me iron out the wrinkles in my version. My playing styleis quite basic, pick the melody and maybe strum the drone strings. My tabs reflect this simplicity. Here is a .jpg file of what I have...

Also, I found these tabs tonight from the www.everythingdulcier.com website:

-------------------
7-5-4-3 2-7-6
7-5-4-3 2-7-5
5-6-5-4 3-4-3 3-4-
5-3-0-2-3
-------------------

They are different, so I'll need to study them for clues to better fitting the lyrics to the melody. Enjoy...

-Rand

Hi Little,
I just read your page and admired your photos and guitars, especially the Cuba and Ramones. I like some color. You are a skilled luthier.
I am most into 2 and 4 strings and old blues songs. I have tried fretting diatonic like you, but I have more playing fun with pentatonic.
My next project plan is for a percussion box for 2 feet.

Good video comment thanks (Rock Star one) - actually I am feeling a lot more confident than I was when I filmed that - fingers crossed it will be a good day out when I play

Hi, thanks for the question. You are right, I don't always use standard cigar boxes so the cutaway in the neck is about the same depth as the top of the lid. If you look at my video "Making a Guitar Neck Part 3" at about 6 minutes in you will see how I deal with it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqChIZ0iR58. I have just finished a ukulele type thing which I will film in the next day or so when the strings have settled. For that I had to make a rounded cutaway for which i drilled some holes then shaped the cutaway with curved edge files. For the recent oak one (I will film for you too) I made the hole too big so I finished it with a walnut surround to cover it up

Battery powered tube amps are possible (for example, they used to have them in car radios before transistors took over). I began looking at the possibility of building a battery powered tube combo for a guitar but I've shelved it for the moment because I've got a backlog of other projects (and I also reckon I need to develop my electronics skills a little more first). I found some useful stuff on the Beavis Audio site (eg. Valve Caster) and also at Sopht amps (see "all tube 12v amps" and Ruby Tuby - althought the latter has a solid state power stage). As I understand it, these things are all based around valves that work on what's known as the "space charge" principle. I reckon it would be possible to build a small valve amp along these lines and power it with a battery. The key factor is the much bigger current draw for tube circuits as compared to solid state ones. I did a bit of investigation into power supply requirements and battery options and I reckon the best bet would be a sealed lead-acid rechargeable - although they're a bit weightier than the other cells you can get ones that are light enough to still make for a carryable amp.

yep i would like to build a little Tube amp myself - i would like it battery powered and portable but not sure if it's possible to power up a Tube /Vale amp on battery power ?

Welcome aboard, LBO! You will find lots of helpful folks and information here on all things CBG (CBU, CBB, etc.) Feel free to poke around, ask questions, and post your stuff (photos, recordings, videos, etc.).

Up in the Free Resources menu at the top, you will see a number of plans for building and playing cigar box guitars/ukuleles/banjos/dulcimers/violins. I encourage you to download any of the plans, take a look at them, and ask questions from there. Also our site is VERY searchable. I bet you your questions have already been asked, so take a few moments and look around.

Join our Chat sometime (see the bar at the bottom of your browser page). Keep in mind that tho the chat window says there are X number of people online, not all may have the chat window up.

Most of all, have fun!
