Jerry Jordan, you are so right, the last time I saw 'black' walnut I was a kid(my uncle was building the Ark). Compare the grain of the slab I posted and the original. Its the same except for the color. Where do you get your pallets from? What a waste!
I vote Black Walnut .,., I love the stuff.,., and i get some from pallets., exposure to the elements turns most woods gray.,.,at least up in the hills.,.,
When I first saw the piece it was quite rough on the sides; my dad ran it through the planer to get the smooth faces seen in the picture, but the color wasn't significantly different before that.
I had some "old" maple that was grey like that. Find an inconspicuous spot and either scrape or sand a small area and see if it changes color. Very nice piece of wood. Headstock?
