Hey... long time member, infrequent commenter here. Some time ago,I read an entry about mounting a 3 pole pickup under the sound board and then placing three small (3/16?) magnets on top of the soundboard and over the poles as a way to extend the magnet field. I also recently noted a Dave Lynas build where he apparently mounted a flatpup under the soundboard with success. I am very interested in these approaches, and any information or guidance in this area would be appreciated  Thanks

Drilling small holes in the top(the size of the pickup poles) just over the pickup poles will help much and the small holes won't be big enough to be a eye sore.

Experimenting and discovery can be one of the most rewarding parts of building. I have a fretless CBG I built in a few hours and use it to try new things before I put it into a serious build.

Hi Terry , not sure why you posted this here  , but . ill answer your question .  The magnets are not needed if the strings are close enough to the pickup underneath . and a mag pickup WILL  still read strings through wood even 2/4  inch thick .The trick is to leave a small space so the pickup is not touching the lid . other wise you may get a micropHonic  / piezoish sound .  your tone may still be a bit "muddy " but some folks like muddy .

  hope thAt helps .
