hi guys and gals !been listening to alot of hollowbelly recently, which got me thinking who /what influeces other peoples cbg music and playing ,as hb is punk and blues and a raw sound ,what would your tastes be? my music taste outside of cb blues is quite wide eg i could listed to son house ,nirvana, rory gallager, and the cramps all in the same hour.
Well if you like things that could be described as punk blues then you might want to check out The Gun Club and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion if you're not familiar with them already.
Personally, I could easily listen to The Fall, Brian Eno, The Black Keys and a dose of original ska in the same hour. But I'm fickle and I have quite a low boredom threshold - so my favourite artist tomorrow might not be on today's playlist and today's top ten might be back on the shelf tomorrow.
I think my main music influence is the Mountain Dulcimer and Old Time (Mountain) Music, also English, Irish, Australian and American folk music in general. Most my canjos, and cigar guitars end up being diatonically fretted, tuned "G-d-g", "D-a-d" or some related combination like "G-dd-gg" on my 5-stringer which I call "Black Tabak" (my latest and greatest build to date). I tend to pick (as opposed to strum) more than anything else, so I focus on melodies and lyrics. I don't do much with chords, but will use the drone strings occasionally, or play melody on both the melody and bass strings simultaneously for a bit more interesting sound. I am also experimenting with dual string courses to add a bit more complexity to my sound. Again, my playing level is elementary at best.
