Cigar Box Nation Newsletter - Tips, lessons, cool instruments

The beauty lies in the simplicity.

Dave David of Switzerland built this elegant 3 string cigar box guitar.  Featuring hand-cut F holes and a simple relic sanding, the instrument has such an understated look. For more inspiration on relic finishes, check out the Cigar Box Nation group, Rat Rod Guitars.

Spruce up a soundhole with leftover screen wire and hot glue

Cigar Box Nation founder, Shane Speal has just completed 24 cigar box guitars in a marathon one-week building session.  The instruments are to meet the Christmas demand and his concert tomorrow at the Hibrewnation Beer Festival in Harrisburg PA.  As he was building, he documented the following tip for soundholes:
I've been using a 3/4" Forsner bit to create clean soundholes in the cigar boxes.  However, it always seems unfinished to leave the hole there.  (A round soundhole is just so plain and not as appealing as a hand cut F-hole.)  After trying several materials, I discovered that a leftover patch of window screen makes a great Dobro-looking cover.
Once you create the sound holes, flip the box open and use a hot glue gun to put a ring of glue around the hole.  Place a patch of screen wire on the glue and then add a little bit more glue on top.  It stays great and look clean on the outside.

From prized pawnshop tones to uptown sounds...all at low, juke joint prices.

by Foundry-Tone
The pickup that captures the looks and gloriously trashy tones of Kent, Kingston, Teisco and other classic pawnshop guitars.  These hot single-coils are voiced for Fat Possum blues and snarling rock.  The single rail design allows perfect response from every string regardless of spacing.
Pawnshop Monorail - $16.99 ea.

Shane Speal "Snake Oil" Mini Humbuckers back in stock!

"The King of the Cigar Box Guitar" favors these pickups because they combine the bite of a snarling single coil and the body of a humbucker.  These pickups drive a tube amp to the limits.

$26.99 pair
