Charles Kimbler's "Supro Radio" inspired cigar box guitar

It's so retro you'll need to put grease in your hair!.  Note the details such as the Polk-O-Laylee style soundholes, the authentic teal colors and the ultra sweet pinstripes.  Awesome job, Charles!  (Visit Charles Kimbler's Cigar Box Nation profile.)

World's First Known Recording of a Cigar Box Guitar

"Beans" by Beans Hambone/El Morrow  1927

"Beans" is a very obscure 78 record recorded by minstrel performers, "Beans" Hambone - El Morrow in 1927. The song was a staple in vaudeville and snake oil medicine shows and tells the story of prisoners forced to eat only beans.  The most unique fact about the song is that Beans Hambone appears to be playing a cigar box guitar on the record...the first time one has been recorded!

Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band prepares Fall/Winter tour, invites other cigar box guitar builders to join in and make it a mobile CBG festival

Cigar Box Nation founder, Shane Speal posted a blog earlier today announcing an upcoming tour with his Snake Oil Band and an invitation for other cigar box guitar builders to join in.

Speal said, "What if I invited other cigar box guitar builders to showcase and sell their instruments at my concerts?  If we play your town, you could be the 'guest seller.'  In doing so, you could help us get the word out when we come to town plus having you as part of the show would create an extra bit of circus to the show."

Summer seems to be a time for playing and enjoying music on the back porch.  However, we still have some great discussions going on in Cigar Box Nation.  Here's just a few we recommend:

Show Us Your Workspace - a place to post pics of your workshops and setups.  What are ya buildin' with? Let us know!

Wiring Up a Washboard With an Electric Pickup - because the world needs more electric washboards, that's why!

The Cigar Box Guitar Manifesto - a post started by Cigar Box Nation owner, Ben "Gitty" Baker and slowly becoming the philosophical discussion of the decade.

Using a Red Cedar Roof Shingle as a Soundboard- We repurpose everything around here.

Lessons from Justin Johnson's 'Smoke and Mirrors' World Tour

The Smoke & Mirrors Tour is rolling on down to the Lone Star State!  This weekend, we'll be bringing handmade music to the Navasota Blues Festival in TX, kicking it all off with a CBG and Diddley Bow Workshop, before taking the stage to serve up a Texas-sized helping of Blues and Roots Music!

Speaking of workshops, I'm excited to announce that in addition to headlining this year's York PA CBG Festival on Saturday, August 23rd, I will also be releasing my brand new 3-part Instructional Roots Music DVD Series at the festival, and leading a FREE CBG workshop at the York Emporium on Sunday, July 24th, from 1-3pm.  This workshop will cover topics from the DVD Series, such as 3-String Guitar, Slide Guitar, and the One-String Diddley Bow.  I always love performing at the York fest, seeing old friends, and making new ones.  This year's York CBG Fest will be the biggest and best, by far, so make sure you mark your calendars!

The Pennsylvania Cigar Box Guitar Festival is two weeks away!

C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply presents:

Location:  On the grounds of the York Emporium Bookstore, 343 W. Market St, York PA 17401

Featuring:

Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band

April Mae and the Junebugs

Justin "The Wizard" Johnson

The Alley Cats (6 and 8 year old cigar box guitar phenoms!)

One String Willie

and many more...

This has become one of the biggest meet-ups for cigar box guitar builders and players in the world.  We want you to be there and be a part of this amazing revolution that you helped create!

Speaking of meet-ups, we are having a beer and pizza jam session the night before the festival.  This means you should plan on getting into town the day before! We've done this before and Cigar Box Nation members from all over hang out, get to meet each other and compare each others instruments.  Ben "C. B. Gitty" Baker will be there along with Nation founder, Shane Speal.   (We're still waiting for all the details from the organizer.  We'll get final info on time and cover charge to you in next week's email.  We'll also post it on the front page of the Nation.)

Also this year:  The Cigar Box Nation After-Party Concert featuring the full theatrical show by Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band.

VENDORS WANTED FOR THE PA CBG FEST! Sell your instruments, crafts and art.  The festival coincides with YorkFest, a huge fine arts festival in downtown York, PA. This means we share thousands of attendees with YorkFest.  We've created a Facebook page with all the info you need to become a vendor.  Act fast...spaces will fill up.
