cbg tuning

Hi . First post on this site . Have just finished my first cbg and tuned it with a stagg tuner . All sounds ok until you try to play it.As soon as you touch the strings they sound dead.I have gone off the charts for fret distances and bridge distance.

It is unfretted by the way with only pencill marks at moment.

Any advice welcomed please

Help on the electronics please!

I'm working on the first of what I hope are many box guitars. I read a post by Ted I think, with a diagram of a single coil PU, that he had supplied, with two volume and one control hooked to a 3-way switch. One volume control was for the single coil, the other pot was for a Piezo.. This is a config. I want to use. But, because I;m not electronically inclined, I don't completely understand it. my question is probably going to sound dumb to many of you, but here goes...on the volume 1 control…

Look For The Civil War Commemorative Album This Fall!

1) That the history of the cigar box, and thus the history of the cigar box guitar, places the cigar box no earlier than the 1840's, about 20 years prior to the Civil War, and

2) That the earliest known engraving or picture of a cigar box instrument shows two Union soldiers sitting in camp, one of them playing a homemade fiddle made from a Figaro cigar box,

I found this announcement from late July this summer particularly interesting:…

Bad Finger Tour of Cambridge

I get over to the UK on business 2 or 3 times a year, but I've never taken my guitars with me until this trip.  I'm glad I made the decision to do so this time as it was one of my best trips out of many.

I arrived at Heathrow fairly early Saturday morning since a heavy tailwind reduced the flight time to just over 5 hours.  That left little time for any sleep.  I made my way by train up to St. Neots, near Cambridge and then on to the house in Kimbolton where I was staying.…

I've been Assimilated

Heya! Did my first build about 5 months ago with the very talented CBG Maker Chris Mitchell of Beechmont.

I've now been assimiliated!

I had the box for about a year and a half, just dreaming about it....

Went to visit Chris just to see if the bits and pieces I had collected would work.

He ended up spending a whole weekend with me on the build in his shed with his cool tools and lotsa cold beverages Ha ha!!!!

She a 4 string and is not finished yet but very playable.…

Meeting with Tom McKnight this evening at the Flying Dog in Sarasota to continue filming the video that we have been working on....Both Steve Arvey and George Worthmore have been filmed playing Cottin Pickin Blues cigar box guitars.  This will hopefully turn into an incredibly comprehensive study of the origin and playing of the Cigar Box Guitar.  We will post it as soon as its completed.

I Don't Like Spam!

Can I get Spam instead of the beans?

Just a little more than 16 years ago my wife and I got married.  We'd been together for a few years and figured out that no one else would have us, so we might as well settle on each other.  Now, both of us are way to stubborn to quit and truly the only way out is death.

Our marriage started from the first moment to be a running stream of jokes and I'll have to take you back a bit for my first one.

I grew up in…

Sometimes, It's More Than Just A Stick In A Box

Well, my wife really surprised me! She left today for Vegas for a girls' weekend with her old sorority sisters from Houston, but before she went, I was telling her about my ultimate acoustic guitar lust object: a Taylor 914ce acoustic-electric Grand Auditorium, Venetian cutaway, Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top, abalone rosette and purfling. I had seen a flawless used one at GC last week for $2899 ( new they are almost $6 K). She said, "Well, you never ask for much, and you did… Continue

My first born

I discover CBG's Saturday just gone while looking for easy to play uke songs.

I can't play guitar, I can't play the uke and now I am thinking I can't play a 3 stringer!.

Anyway I decided to use a few days of my holiday to build one and what a learning curve that was.

I have never attempted anything like this before and I am real proud of myself for completing it.

It plays fines ( guitarist son played with it) all be it a little bit too tinny for my…
