How did you learn about Cigar Box Nation?
It's been so long, I don't remember.
How many instruments have you built so far?
Is "too many" a good answer?
What do you find most interesting about cigar box guitars? (If you do not enter something meaningful here (at least one sentence long), your membership may be rejected as a spam/bot fake account).
I had a sound in my head I wanted to get out. It wasn't possible on a traditional instrument, so I build an instrument around that sound. The possibilities are wide open... limited only by imagination (and maybe skill, ha!)

What did YOU do this weekend?

Posted on April 25, 2011 at 2:30pm 3 Comments

It all started on Thursday night.

I'd corralled a couple of friends into coming to see Hillstomp, from Portland OR.  Those boys flat out kill it!  Henry playing the banjo, guitars and cigar box guitar, John playing the "drum" set (which is cobbled together from old radiator parts, plastic buckets, maybe a legit drum or two, and a shitload of duct tape).

Got to talking about 2 man bands, and the possibility of my two-man band opening for them.  So, we'll see…

If you're lookin' for a fool... here I am

Posted on March 16, 2010 at 5:18pm 3 Comments

They say that a fool and his money are soon parted. Man, I would pay someone a lot of cash to explain that to me.....

Today started out ok. Very tired due to daylight savings and early work hours, but work went by pretty quickly and I was able to get a lot of shop time in.

Made a lot of great progress, too. Got everything drilled out, tuners aligned, and everything was perfect. Now, I'm not all that great, and usually I'll get it "good enough," but when I say…

Captain Beefheart's Ten Commandments For Guitarists

1. LISTEN TO THE BIRDS...That's where all the music comes from. Birds know everything about how it should sound and where that sound should come from. And watch hummingbirds. They fly really fast, but a lot of times they aren't going anywhere.

2. YOUR GUITAR IS NOT REALLY A GUITAR...Your guitar is a divining rod. Use it to find spirits in the other world and bring them over. A guitar is also a fishing rod. If you're good, you'll land a big one.

3. PRACTICE IN FRONT OF A… Continue

Friday in the shop

Posted on October 23, 2009 at 7:15pm 1 Comment

For once, I took my camera with me down to the shop. Usually, I really have trouble taking the time to STOP what I'm doing to bust out the camera. I'm always too interested in what I'm doing to take any "in progress" shots (and I really appreciate and value those of you who do -- since they are usually quite helpful to see)... ...and I guess today was no real exception. I began with glueing a fingerboard to a stretch of oak.

Then, I guess the… Continue

New Two Stringer

Posted on September 27, 2009 at 5:58pm 0 Comments

I've spent the past few days getting familiar with my tenth build... a two string electric.

This is the first electric CBG I've done, thanks to the bitchin' electromagnetic pickup known as Stonehenge. I've known Ted Crocker has done some incredible work based on his photographs, but actually getting my hands on something infused by Ted is a good feeling!

I first plugged it into my Micro Cube, to test it and make sure it works.

This is the moment of truth...… Continue

Hi Nathan,

Congratulations on winning the 2011 Cigar Box Nation Builder's Challenge. It's a very nice build. I really like the graceful neck and headstock design. Maybe you could gift us with some additional photos from different angles, if you have some (or maybe after you get your CBB (banjo) back from judging.) I'm sure the banjo fans in the Banjo Player Unite discussion group would like to see how you did the neck and headstock, and maybe more photos would show off some of the other winning features.

Sincerely,

-Rand.

Let me be the first to say: CONGRATULATIONS, NATE!!

Your banjo is a sublime combination of vintage influences and modern design. Can't wait to see/hear it!

Thanks for the dot link.  Those are great.  They look nice and very affordable.  Keeping the price down on the more affordable CBG and making them look nicer.

Nate -- Been thinking about you... Wondered about what happened with Hymn For Her at Lion's Lair, for one thing. Looks like you have been busy building this summer. Man, you make some super-nice CBG's! Last week I got a call from the music store asking for more CBBanjos, so I've been busy, too!

Hi Nathan, my name is Shawn Jones and I live in Edwards. I saw your guitars recently in the paper and thought they were awesome. I have a good friend who is turning 30 this week(thurs) and a bunch of us were looking for a great gift to give him for the special birthday. He's an avid musician and would love one of your CBG's. Are you in the valley currently, or am I a little late on the draw? my email is Mrsoul8150@gmail.com or call me ASAP at 970-688-1680. Hopefully I hear form you soon.
