Bolt on necks

Is anyone using bolt on necks?  Any problems or recommendations.  I know it may require some bracing depending on the type of box you are using.Continue

"Years ago one of my personal guitars with an oak neck bow badly. My theory is oak is a poor choice for a neck because oak has inconsistent density. The dark streaks are much harder than the lighter coloured parts of oak. I believe that's why…"

Neck bowing

Was just looking over 5 of my cbgs that I built for myself over the last couple of years and noticed the necks have all started to bow.  The necks are all thru the box oak with poplar fret boards and they are strung with light to medium gage strings. I use 1x3 oak and they are all 3 string.  Wondering if cutting a slot down the middle of the neck and inserting a piece of flat steel would stiffen the neck and prevent bowing. Anyone tried this?  Any thoughts?  See More

I haven’t had much bowing trouble yet with very many guits built. I make sure to use quarter sawn blanks but have used diagonal grain on a few builds. I’ve repaired a lot of Steele reinforced necks with a rusty metal spine in a slot under their fingerboards. They are strait. I think it can work pretty good. I’ve had a couple of necks twist. They still play ok though. I don’t think using a one by two is a good idea. I’ve seen many of those bow. I have a Shane Speal and a Weekly house guitar that bowed using a 1 x 2 neck. I start with a 1 1/2 inch blank and earlier I used 2x2 blanks. I now use poplar stock. It’s working well.
