ILL GREEN replied to Brent Kasl's discussion Jack/Strap Combo
"Depends if its a stereo or mono jack.  The two small pins are your positive, both need to connect with a single wire if you going mono. For stereo, one is hot the other cold and ground remains as ground."

ILL GREEN replied to Michael Pounds's discussion Lacquer on antique box?
"I'd use acrylic-lacquer spray. Dries in minutes, so you can layer maybe 6 or 7 coats before the can finishes in 2 hours or so. There's also acrylic-polyurethane spray, which is just as good."

ILL GREEN replied to Sean Murphy's discussion Securing screened grommets for sound hole?
"I always try make a tight fit. If the diameter is 1 inch I try to make a 15/16 hole or 7/8 and file away. Makes gluing nonexistent. "

ILL GREEN replied to Paul Craig's discussion What's on your workbench?
"Right now, almost done with the 7 guitars I'm building. 1 is top priorty because my father's birthday is next week.  He is the reason how I got into guitar making.  He originally had a black Telecaster when he met my mother.…"

ILL GREEN replied to Arthur Payne's discussion Why have a switch? in the group CBG wiring & electronics.
"Couple of ways to have a no-toggle-switch guitar. But all root to how the pickups were made. One should be north and the other, south. Both can be wounded the same direction. The positive becomes the ground and the negative becomes the hot of one…"

ILL GREEN replied to micky rooney's discussion aluminium bobbins
"Bobbins should be non-conductive. Wood or acrylic thin boards around 1/8" or 3/16" would be recommended. Or any  non-conductive material, even a vinyl record. Coils need to be suspended, if you used aluminum, you can fry the whole…"

ILL GREEN replied to François's discussion Using a valve headphone pre-amp
"You should be fine using it as a preamp.  I never installed a headphone preamp inside a guitar, but I have used them in recordings to boost levels I needed because I had a bare bones 4 track Tascam with just level and panning, oh and the…"

ILL GREEN replied to Jeffrey Blessing's discussion Fret width / depth
"Just by taste.  Also some buy their frets for the ease of nipping and installing like the low narrow frets; they are easier to nip than wide jumbo frets. I buy gold medium frets when going all gold hardware, even the nut is polished brass. Most…"

ILL GREEN replied to Mike Kinzie's discussion Bolt on necks
"I suggest to cut out neck plates from 1/4" thick wood. Or if you are a blacksmith, you can custom make your own plates because I never found metal neck plates for a cbg. I tend to make my own from wood. Also, if you have a truss rod in the…"

ILL GREEN replied to Shane Speal shanespeal.com's discussion How to Mount Humbuckers + Sound Demo of "Toaster Bucker" pickups

What do you find most interesting about cigar box guitars? (If you do not enter something meaningful here, your membership may be rejected).
I love guitars of all kinds. Its the sound and tone of them that attracts me. The thing I love more about CBGs, is the nature of building something out of nothing. Taking average, everyday material and creating an instrument that will fly you to the moon and forget about the world. I don't know if the word exists to describe the world of ingenuity CBGs are, but its dank, dirty, garage, gully and best of all, funky.
