String Gauges -3 string ?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Frank Scott 15 minutes ago. 3 Replies

Since most all of you are building three string CBGs can you give me your opinion on what gauge strings you use since mine will not have a truss rod. Just a basic oak neck and fret board.  Just want…Continue

Anyone have advice as to the best finish to put on an oak fret board and how you go about it? Normally I use almond oil on rosewood fret boards but was not sure about oak. Thanks for any info.Continue

Fret Slot filling?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Frank Scott Oct 6. 14 Replies

A while back I bought a CBG from a builder and the next thing I knew was the neck had a major bow. I tried to contact him to get it replaced but it seems getting an answer has been long over due so I…Continue

Neck bow on a new unit?

I have been having an issue with the action on this unit since I got it and today decided to pull off the neck and do a real check on it. I know without a truss rod you can have a little relief which…Continue

"Hello John,  I would be tuning GDG (basic open G tuning). I would think the heavier gauge set you recommend would put more stress on the neck than a set with 32,24,16. Am I correct or am I confused?  I would think the 46,30,22 would sound…"

"What gauge you choose depends on what tuning you go for...you can still put a lot of load on a neck with light gauge strings if they are tuned high.  I use 046, 030, 022 for GDG tuning . With a .016 on the top you'd be looking at something…"

String Gauges -3 string ?

Since most all of you are building three string CBGs can you give me your opinion on what gauge strings you use since mine will not have a truss rod. Just a basic oak neck and fret board.  Just want to double check to make sure I do not put anything too heavy that would cause the neck to bow. Thanks for any advice.  My thoughts would be something like .016,.024,.032 or a .017. .026, .036 nickel wound for electric guitar since I have a single wound pick up.  I was thinking any heavier might…See More

"Now that is very interesting Doughboy. Thanks for the information. I have always liked the antique violin look. If I get into that anytime soon I may try to contact you to answer any questions I may have."

"I just give the fret board several coats of mineral oil (baby oil ) and let it dry. When I change strings I clean the fret board with a slightly moist Mr. Eraser and drymit. Then I reapply oil."

"You can do it either way, but a light sanding and a few regular coats afterwards is needed to make it smooth."

"Thanks Kigar I had no idea that you could use it that way.  After you wet sand with it do you just wipe off the wood surface?"

"Truoil can also work as a filler by wet sanding with fine sand paper. Fills the pores with the same wood for a perfect match."

"I haven't tried superglue as a wood filler yet, I'm after more of a natural feel and look as hand rubbing tru-oil into the wood gives you, but I never turn down new ideas."

"I watched a video of a luthier using super glue on a piece of walnut and was amazed how well it looked after just a few coats and also how hard the finish turned out. It looked great."
