David replied to James Pobog's discussion fret (and fret marking) experiments
"James It was a pain but I have a small adjustable square I use like a caliper. After the height is set for the first one it is easy to move from fret to fret and keep them consistent. I then made the nut and bridge to fit the fret height. I will…"

"Good morning I have used finish nails as frets on old school dulcimer. I did like you did and made the saw mark first then rounded it out slightly with a file. As for color could you heat it with a torch? I realize you would have to it before…"

David replied to Sean Murphy's discussion Tung oil vs Danish Oil?
"I like both of the finishes you mentioned. Lately I have been using tru-oil for gun stocks. It can give for a soft sheen to high gloss depending on how many coats you want to apply,(usually many coats). But again can take time to finish. I guess you…"

"I primarily use med/med If the action is set right you can fret or slide Jumbo tall frets makes for easier fingering but you'll get a lot of slide chatter My 2 cents"

"Just a little curious I've seen this everywhere, what does the designation med/med mean? I understand the size aspect, not the other med. Is it like a soft/med/hard material, If so what kind?"

"I have been using wide pyramid frets from stew mac. https://www.stewmac.com/Materials_and_Supplies/Fretwire/StewMac_Wide_Fretwire.html I will be changing up to wide highest frets hopefully a little easier to crown. The taller frets give you a little…"

Fret size

Good morning everyoneJust wondering what size fret wire people use on their builds. I usually use medium/medium for frets and a jumbo for 0 frets. I have built a dulcimer using finish nails ( a real challenge to level fretting). I was thinking of trying jumbo frets for the next build with no 0 fret just a nut. Any one use the jumbo frets on their builds?See More
