I used a bit of old cutting board to make the nut. Very easy to work with and seems to work fairly well as a nut. I planned on screwing it to the neck - but the strings hold it in place well enough. I did have to get a little creative in how the tuners are wound though to get decent string alignment. And the carving of the UK caused a slight issue with mounting the highest tuner (there was no material where it was supposed to screw in) so it had to be mounted kind of funny anyway.
