Tabak Especial paint can lid resonotor

Here is my first shot at a resonator cbg. I'm using a paint can lid. I notice most that I've seen don't seem to do anything with the lid. I hammered mine some just to tighten it up and hopefully brighten the sound. Not sure if it makes much of a difference but it looks more "crafted" this way. More pics to come!

  • I'll have to try the epoxy mix. Thanks Bob.
  • I'll probably use epoxy with saw dust. Seems like it'll have a better bond. I've done both, but it seems like the saw dust tends to dry up the glue if you use to much and the epoxy stays wetter with more saw dust added.
  • A mix of glue and sawdust can fix most anything.
  • Well Dave.....I think this one is going to have a life of its own. Lol. I'll make it work even though it might actually be easier to scrap it and start over. I just have a hard time doing that.
  • You go Bob. My first cuts are always screwed up. It's the ability to refine the screw up into art that makes it come to life. A life of it's own.
  • Tonight wasn't my night. I've put a lot of work into this neck. I decided to use fret markers like I used on one of my last builds. Kinda hard to explain them but it involves cutting notches in the side of the neck and then filling them in with a contrasting wood. First, I cut notches in the wrong side of the neck. So my markers are on the bottom of the neck....unless I make it left handed....or add them on both sides. Plus my walnut fret board chipped out pretty bad. I refuse to give up. I hope my mistake turns into a "wow" cool look that someone says "I would have never thought of that"......I didn't either. :) I try to make the best of things!
  • T-gripped, I cut the hole a little on the small side planning to do some sanding to make it pop into the hole. I was going to epoxy it around the edge on the inside. Turns out, the lid fit in the hole as is. It is snug as a bug and I'll have no need for epoxy. It takes a little effort to pop it out. Plus the strings will hold it down anyway. I'll post pictures when it's done. The bridge, I usually use some brazilian cherry. Not sure exactly how I'm doing this one yet.
  • nice.  I happen to have an extra lid and was thinking about this very thing. How is your lid attached to the box? What are your plans for the bridge? Post again when your'e finished

  • Thanks Dave! The jig......I built a small hutch for my cousin. I used maple plywood and figured the design to have enough plywood left over to build a nice sled. I ended up haking the hutch about an inch too narrow...miscomunication...so now I have to build another hutch.....that means I also get a new sled. :) The "bad" hutch, I resold fir an additional $25 to a store I sometimes build for. Good deal!!!
