I finally found a used bass drum pedal at the local flea market and built my suitcase kick drum I've wanted for a while. The suitcase was $3.00 at the thrift store and the wood was scrounged. It was totally worth the wait! Sounds HUGE. Very worthwhile project.

Yea Mike, EQ'd correctly at the sound board and these sound every bit as good as a top line kick! The mic sits on a small pillow with a foam pop filter on it. No effects, high set at +5, mid around -3 and the low end dimed. It'll be different through a diff board I'm sure. But those settings are a good place to start. A Shure PG 48 is actually what he has in there, I just checked. They're way cheaper than a 58 too...
It is definitely worth it. It is a LOT of fun and really fits well with a cigar box guitar. Post us a video when you get yours conjured up. With your massive guitar tone it's gonna be good...
