suitcase bass

Red Oak/Poplar neck, Red Oak fingerboard nut and bridge and saddle (saddle in this case meaning "piece of wood with holes drilled in it"). Pine internal support.Weedwacker strings, elephant ear tuners and beer bottle opener on the headstock to hide my sloppiness.I'm going to be cutting some f-holes this week. Also need to add a rod of some sort on the bottom... there was an IV pole int he trash at work and might find it's way to the bed of my truck.Sounds decent enough, really really fun to finally play some rockabilly. I am planning on placing a disk peizo under the fingerboard and a rod peizo on the bridge. I am planning on a blend knob as a pick up selector and I may even place an inline volume control for the peizo under the fingerboard which I imagine the slapping could get pretty loud. So basically it's going to be wired like a P-Bass but with peizos and much less competently built.

  • This is nice! Awesome bass dude! Really sounds nice PKB. Thanks for posting the vid.
  • Thank you. I uploaded the video on the CBN video page as well.

I will post another once I get some pick ups in there... hopefully with some guitar accoaccompaniment.
  • Yeah man! I can hear bass notes pretty good. I think it's a good idea to have control over the neck piezo since you'll likely have plenty of slap sound supplied by the bridge rod. You should post this vid on CBN page so more folks can see and hear it!

  • Video says so much more. Has a decent tone. Sound hole & just move a sticky piezo around till you find the best spot.

  • There we go, the embed video.

    Enjoy!!

  • Suitcase full of blues.  Snoot full of booze.   Cool.  Just the thing for rockabilly and lots of styles.

  • DIY suitcase upright double bass: http://youtu.be/9TeaTT0UU0g

Thanks very much for the kind words. I threw a quick video demo up on youtube.
Excuse the playing, I am a mediocre guitar player and certainly not a bass player much less an upright bass player.
  • Wicked cool...just need you a matching suitcase bass amp...very nice.

  • Very cool and great job!!!

  • Very cool PKB. Looks like you're ready for some rockabilly slapping for sure. Be great to hear it. I used a length of all thread on the bottom of mine which can be screwed/unscrewed to comfortable height. The bottle opener may end up with a practical function.
