Radio/Tape Deck Hacked Into Guitar Amp

This little radio is pretty sweet. The previous owners left it in the garage of the first home I owned. I used to use the radio when working out there, but for about 10 years it's sat idle. When I discovered the you can hack a radio/tape player into a guitar amp, I immediately dug this up and tried it. It was really very easy! I did a more modern (but still 15 years old) boom box too that has a much fuller sound but not as much crunch.I hacked into the tape head, so you have to set this to Cassette mode and press Play to play your gitty through it. It's got a nice overdriven tone. You can hear it in this video: https://youtu.be/FLMd6_I7hNY

  • Maddog how cool that you hacked it to be able to record! I tried to do that on the dual tape boom box I hacked, but the record side was already busted. I wasn't able to repair it, so it's 'just' a guitar amp and radio. I was actually using it as a radio yesterday while I worked in the yard for several hours. Have you hacked a straight up radio before? I haven' done that yet but think I'm gonna try. Looks more complicated to figure out where to solder up on the volume pot.

  • Nice Janis!

I've done a few out of radio's just like this one and they really do have a nice crunchy sound. One of the hacks I did I can put in a blank cassette and record when I play and play it back. Kinda fun :-)
