Here's a close-up of the end of the coil, with wire leads attached and a mounting hole. You can just make out the ends of the coil wire, attached to the grommets made of brass string-ends. As I'm winding, I stop every 1000 or so turns and paint some shellac onto the coil to hold it together - maybe not quite as solid as wax potting, but the same idea.
