Comment by Chuck Cobillas on June 25, 2014 at 3:01pm: I bought a table top 1942 Philco with a very nice cabinet at a flea market a couple of months ago for $20. The seller told me it used to work but he said the only thing it does now is hum. He also included a new grill cloth to replace the original torn one. The speaker was busted also. I was planning to replace the speaker and put some new electronics in it to use as an amp. When I got it home I put a new cord on it and plugged it in and to my surprise it worked! I was able to tune in stations all the way up and down the band. Now I didn't have the heart to gut it and make an amp out of it so I sent the speaker to a guy and had it re-coned for $35. It sounds great, but to be honest I would get more use out of it as an amp!
