This view of the Herschel Brown original shows the strum area. Note that there is not a carved out strum hollow. CanJoe*John literally wore the pulp of the wood away on this instrument by practicing so much. (Notice the finger oils on the finger board too). The strum hollow cut out on modern canjoes developed as an adaptation because of this. Note, too, the stabilizer on the back. This was put on by Herschel only on the first few he ever made and discontinued when he decided they weren't needed. CanJoe*John still uses them in some of his designs.
