To make a slotted head stock, mark the center-line of the headstock. About 1" above the nut area, mark the low end of the slot, and then about 1" below the head, mark the high end of the slot. Then mark off points along this center line about every 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Then take a nail and a hammer and pound in starter holes ate each of these marks along the center-line. The, starting with the smallest drill bit you have, drill out each hole, then change to a somewhat larger drill bit and re-drill each of these holes. Repeat this process of changing to larger drill bits and drilling the holes out until you have drilled the holes out with your 1/4" drill bit. By now the holes should start to "come together" as you drill with the larger drill bits. Next, take a wood chisel and chisel out and remaining wood in the slot. Then take your wood rasp, wood files and sand paper and finish shaping and smoothing the walls of the slot.
