I used one of these for the fretboard and headstock...
And then sealed with poly. On other builds I've also used acrylic paint and my wife's very expensive Copic markers (won't make that mistake again, lol).

I use oil paints Lonman. That way I can mix a color I like. It’s tough paint too. Slow drying but long lasting.
