  • I build mine upside down.  But I think planning it down would work also.

  • I thought the same thing - it's not very loud as an acoustic, but it had a nice mellow sound to it. Adding the electric pickup worked great for the added volume. I had played around with pickup placement before installing- I've often heard the ideal pup location would be around 24th fret, but I liked the sound better closer to the bridge on this one. Happily, that also meant not chopping the lion. I used bubinga for the nut, bridge and fret board - so all around, a nice mellow tone.

All the bands that performed that night for the event signed the box - and I was lucky enough to catch Little G Weevil after his set. He played it for a while - it sounded amazing through the matching Undercrown 9-volt amp I had built to go along with it. Wish I had video, but I was too busy listening and didn't think about it until afterward...

  • Alan - I'm trying to post a link to the discussion with Richey on my CBG with a rather thick top.

May need to cut and paste into your browser....

  • Alan - I know what you mean.  However, I thought the same thing, built one up and it sounds great acoustically.  In fact Richey Kay responded that he tends to like the thicker topped boxes.  It doesn't make much sense to me, but it sure sounded fine by my perspective.

  • Nice work.  I have a Undercrown box in my inventory.  The top seems a little thick.  How are the acoustics for this box?

I am considering planning is down to 1/8".

  • Thank you for the great comments - The Undercrown boxes are some of my favorites too (as well as both my sons - they're both working on their first CBGs, and they both chose Undercrowns :)

  • Yup!

  • Amen to that, Gary! A stellar box for CBGs!
  •  A real beauty and my current favorite box.

  • There's a lot to like about this build !!!!
