Padauk with walnut center strip. I measured a friend's P Bass to try and get the dimensions right. He looked at me funny when I asked to measure his nut!

Thanks Janis. I'll send you a link to the Uke Bass I made a while back. Real short (21") scale using special U Bass strings. It sold pretty quickly so I need to make another since it was so much fun.
Wow, Jim!!! Now I'm re-inspired to make a bass. I got scale templates, tuners, & pups a couple months ago for a full bass & short scale, but I've been having so much fun with the diddleys and cbgs I put it off. Bass is the first instrument I learned (although never really well). I picked it up & took lessons when I was about 14. Short scale is a lot easier for me being a smaller person. Anyway, your bass is beautiful! The woodwork is awesome! Wow!
Wow, Jim. That is absolutely gorgeous. The way the strings sit over the walnut strip, it almost looks like it is part of the grain. Remarkably beautiful.

Thanks Patrick. I forgot to mention that the nut is a knitting needle cut down to size. I ran out of bone nut material.
Really fine workmanship Jim!
Thanks Unc. It was a lucky accident that the string spacing matched the width of the walnut. Some things work out in spite of ourselves!
