AGP #291 - ''El Rey''

AGP #291 - “El Rey”(3 String Cigar Box Guitar)Scale: 628.65 mm / 24¾ inchesStrings : .044NW / .030NW / .020NW /Tuning : G / D / g /The Neck is Grey Iron Bark, the Fretboard, Bridge, Nut & Headstock wings are Forest Red Gum, unstained and coated with a brush on French polish. The 8.8k 3-Pole hand wound West Australian Sheoak “Mortal Coil” Pickup, which is hard wired to the Jack, is a bit of a departure from my usual “Tight Arse” ways of using cheap Ebay Chinese & second hand Mag Pups, and was well worth the extra money spent, and while my hearing isn’t all that acute these days, I’m pretty sure there is difference, it does sound great !!!.Done more as an experiment than anything else, the wiring is also a departure from my normal way of doing things, in that I used Auto Electrical Terminals rather than soldering, cost a few bucks extra, but works just fine :-d

  • Thanks!!!, Jeff 'Bones' Reilly,  Dave Lynas & Uncle John, was going to put a few grommet type sounds holes in the top, but couldn't bring myself to do any more than was necessary to this fine looking box, and no 'UJ', I never "Guzzle Beer" while I'm building, "BUT", I do guzzle quite a few after I'm finished for the day just to wash down the sawdust   :-D

  • Hey, where is the sound hole?
  • Beauty AGP!
  • HEY!   You forgot the sound holes.  Are you guzzling beer while you build?   Ha, that could account for the big spending.

  • Nice I like the simple rustic look cool pics AGP#
  • "Thanks Dano", when I done the wiring I also wondered about if clipping onto the Jack would be a problem, the Female Terminal Clip is a little bigger than the Male Lug of the Jack, and I did have to crimp one of the Female Clips to tighten it a tad, but when all finished it worked just fine.

Haven't done a build yet!, using a Capacitor with a Piezo, the link below should take you to a Utube Vid by C.B.Gitty (Ben Baker) and Glen Watt on how to do the Capacitor-Piezo wiring  :-)

  • "Thanks UJ", El Rey Del Mundo  is what is written on the Box, thanks to Google Translate in Spanish it means The King of the World, and I just shortened it to "El Rey" (The King), just about to order another of these 'Nice Pups', I just hope I don't get kicked out of the "Tightass Club" :-D

  • A beaut, AGP.  Did the Auto Electrical Terminals clip on the jack OK?  I have been considering these and also wondering how to add a capacitor for piezo builds.

  • El Rey is Spanish for 'the king'.   Super nice and kind of subtle.  I like that.  Nice pickup you big spendthrift.

  • "Thanks James O" Had this box stowed away for the last couple of years waiting for a build idea to come to mind that would do its beauty justice, the Neck Timbers and Pickup recently acquired, in my mind anyway,  seemed to be the right choice   :-D
