AGP #216 - ''King Edward'' - Deshined

As is obvious by the "worm holes" in the back of the head stock, I had 3 goes at fitting new tuners, (1) was the shiny temporary ones, (2) was 3 old tuners salvaged from cheap 6 string finds, relicted them as per the pic on the right, looked great!, but!, after fitting discovered that 2 of them were too worn to take the tension, and were last seen leaving the shed door at abt Mach 1, (probably find them with mower next week!), (3) finally had to settle on some black ones I had on hand.

  • "Thanks Andries", for those ideas ,I remember as a youngster using Blueing Ink on an old .22 Rifle I owned, when antiquing bits and pieces of galvanised sheeting and cans for resonators & tailpieces etc., I usually dip them in the acid vinegar solution mention in my reply to Carl below, then fire them to red hot with a gas torch and quench them water, which essentially blues them, then finished with some WD40.

  • "Thanks Carl", for those antiquing tips, the 2nd lot of tuners (the ones I really liked the look of) had plastic knobs, which I roughed up a bit with a file, then put in a mixture of hydrochloric acid and vinegar for a while, then dipped in an Oak Stain and left to dry, might buy some new Chinese cheapies and have another go.

  • "thanks James O", for your kind comments!

  • Actually the 'worm holes' give the wood that 'I used to be something else' look. As for antiquing the black I've got none so I couldn't even try, but I will shortly so I will. I can antique chrome, quick once over with a scotch pad and tooth brush flick on some black, tan, blue water based paint then light rub with a sponge brush before they dry and a very light coat of matt clear. Sounds odd but works a treat.
A friend wanted his red strat relic'ed but didn't want to spend stupid money on relic'ed bits so I had to improvise.

  • Just think of something,in order to age tuners and still let them opperate in a good order, age new tuners by using stain ,the same stain they use on metal protection for gun's, guns's you say yes! there is some stuff we call bleu ink to protect the metal that stains and ages it, not only in bleu but in grey and antiek finisch aswell the proces is usualy baked on but there is all so a cold version, just apply and dry maybee something to use for the RElic style ? Greeeettszz A.D your welcom !
