57 Phillies “Violin Chugger” CBG

My Chugger take on the iconic Beatle Bass. 23” scale length, flourocarbon fishing line strings, GD tuning, piezo pickup. 3D printed components. Picked up the vintage 1957 Cigar Box over the weekend and since it is my birth year, I had to have it!

  • This was the first time the year has ever been noted on a cigar box I have looked at (the copyright year is on the back of the box). When I saw it was a 57, I had to have it. A very unlikely find!

I agree Uncle John; 57 was a good year!!!

  • 57 was a good year.  Cars, Elvis, Music, Purple People Eaters, Hula Hoops and Doug Tee.  Oh, I remember Charles Starkweather was on a murder rampage in Nebraska - I think it was that year.  I was concerned he might cross the river to Iowa and GET  7 year old me.

I would like to test ride this 57.

Doug, I think you were around when Clock was here.  He recently died.

  • Pieter. The headstock is a modified version of an existing bolt on design. I wanted a more interesting end and the curve was beyond my skills in openscad, so I took advantage of a shape in PowerPoint that had the curve I wanted, took a screenshot of it, traced it in Inkscape, and saved it as an .svg file which allowed me to import and extrude it in openscad. The tuners are high end left handed locking Kluson ones I got on a smoking deal from Stewart MacDonald years ago (I think it was $10 for a set of 6, so I bought a bunch of them!) They are supposed to go 6 in a row. I put one on the other side and wound the string outside in so the tuner would work as expected. I like it much better than 2 in a row on one side. I know that’s not how you are supposed to do it, but it works fine. Locking tuners are awesome. On the heavy side, but only 2 are required!!!

Agreed … 57 was a very good year!

  • Doug. That headstock is quite unique. I can not figure out the (really fine) details of it looking at the photo.  Even the tuners look different to anything I have seen before. Very interesting.

As for birthyears - I am also doubled-up with a '57-model. The '57's seem to run well as pairs.

  • Thanks Pieter and I agree with you. Nothing quite like a 57 model. My wife is too!

I have been doing multicolor prints for a while now. The nut (zero fret/string guide combo) is one of my designs too. I use multicolor sparingly as it can really waste filament. The 57 was an afterthought to tie the plain headstock to the box.

  • Thanks for the flamboyant feedback BrianQ! I am definitely partial to 1957.

  • Doug. This is the first photo of a multi-coloured 3D print on one of your guitars that I have seen. I quite like it. Is the nut one of your prints as well ?

    PS:

I am a '57 model as well. They do not make them like that any more !

  • That was a good year for lots of reasons, you!! :)
