    robert,

    unless I'm on a special project, I mostly use medium electric strings (9s and 10s).   my first year in I tuned open d, using the 6-5-4-3 strings.  Since then for most of my performance work I tune open g7th using the 5-4-3-2 strings out of a medium set.  I play mostly amped.
