4 pole pickup with 3 strings

I want to reconfigure my 4 string cbg as a 3 string. Can I still use my 4 pole pickup with the wider string spacing? There would be a string over each of the outside poles and one between the two inside ones.

Or would a proper 3 pole pickup be much b

I'm trying to learn to play my 4 string in the style of Daddy Stovepipe's videos. Has anyone ever tabbed any of these?
