Ade - As with most aspects there are no rules. Yes 1x2 bought from timber merchants is less than that. I think the nominal sizes are quoted before the timber is planed.

I've been converted to metric now and seem to have settled on 30mm wide and 20mm thick mainly because I have a load of wood that is 20mm. For a 3 stringer 30mm is a nice width working on the strings being about 10mm apart it leave 5mm at each edge. I've made narrower ones too but prefer this size. A 4 stringer obviously needs to be a bit wider. Haven't made one yet but I would probably make the neck 40mm wide. Sometimes it's determnined by what wood I can get. I like to use hardwood that has been acquired for free, so beggars can't be choosers :)

what size should the neck be? people say 1x2, but i read somewhere that 1x2 is actually 1 1/2 x 3/4?? 1x2 seems a bit wide too, would 1x11/2 do, or 1x1, or is it a strength thing.
not sure i should be posting this in here, but figured US sizes might differ.
thanks.
ps got some boxes today, there were some lying around work from christmas, quality street, roses and shortbread tin, just need some wood for neck and i'm away!!

Mick - sustain can be a problem. I found that the thicker boxes have the best. If you think about it, the sound is created by the vibration of the box surfaces. A heavier denser wood will continue to vibrate longer than a lightweight one. Also the neck material has an influence. The denser woods are better.

Hi Brian, thanks for your kind comments but I only rate myself as average but nevertheless it's a nice warm feeling to think that something I have contributed has helped or inspired someone else. Now if anyone here hasn't seen Brian's guitars yet go there now. If you want inspiration for building a CBG you need look no further, he has some of the best designs in here.

It's also great to see so many CBG Brits coming out of the closet now and some communication!

man, smojo you getting quite a group here, great things are bound to happen, you guys are some folks i highly admire.i read about the united kingdom a lot so i feel some sort of kinship with you folks,we are all brothers in this nation here and i would like to say i think of you folks from the united kingdom as brothers of mine. if it were not for you smojo i would not have as much ambition to play as much cigarbox guitar as i do. so thanks for your influence on me smojo.you are a great player.let there be cigarbox guitar music throughout the world. so let it be written so let it be done.

Got into CBGs at the local busbers night, a guy used to come in once in a while and play his National Dobro guitar, then one night he brought a 3 stringer he had just bought and it blew us away, i thought then i gotta have one. Forgot all about them until I picked up on Shane Speal on youtube,,, and here we are, picked up the plans from cigar box nation, had a chat with smojo and i've now completed my first one, cannot wait to get started on "product improvement"... Ha ha...

I've made my first prototype (so to speak), it plays nicely but there is no sustain, notes play when the string is played but there is no ring to them, any ideas... I thought about a bigger box and about a better box. The prototype is made from a cigar box where the wood is thin balsa covered in even thinner wood sheet and stuck together with paper. Thought I might try to make my own box, have got some nice thick ply...

Ade yes I've seen it thanks, given me some ideas. Randy - it looks pretty complicated, don't know if you can buy them?
