cigar box ukes- ukulele cosmos
been looking into and have started making a real ukulele c.f. my normal creations, and have found some new ideas and techniques on this website (you will need to regisiter though) apparently ukulele tops are quite stable even down to 2mm, which i have never been brave enough to do. any way the link shows another way to make cbu's and thought you guys might enjoy. cheers Cliff
Scott,
It is a bolt on design. I am using machine screws and barrel nuts, like on the Ikea furniture.
Great lookin uke! I'm starting to build my first one. hope it comes out alright.
Thanks, Scott
This is my 30th build and uke # 19. It is a concert uke with 15" scale length. I have made quite a few with these Ashton (Churchill) boxes. I like the size and the sound. This one is strictly acoustic so far and it sounds great. I call it Winchester. I removed the box lid hinges and clasp and bolted the neck to the body front. Then I slide the top in from the rear. It is fastened with 2 screws on the back and 1 dowell in the front.
The whole project went together very well. The neck is Mahogany and the fretboard is Walnut that I milled myself. Also the heel is Walnut.
I think this will be my personal uke. Not for sale. It is not quite finished yet, but very close.
Glad to have helped, just happened to see it at the right time I guess. Lots of places sell Aquila strings, should be easy to find. Tons of utube lessons for ukes too, mostly fun/light songs. I can only play a few songs on them myself but find them lots of fun.
