Welcome!

This is a Group for anyone living in the great state of California, who builds, plays, or is just a fan of Cigar Box Guitars, and similar Handmade instruments. If you don't want to say exactly where you live, just say Northern, Southern, etc. I want to be abreast of any major gatherings...this summer is out, for me, but maybe next....

I'm hooked ! I slap a stand up bass with a K&K Rockabilly pick up, and can't wait to build one of these racketboxes. The sound is awesome ! A great show in York !

Rodney, that is an awesome license-plate guitar! I'm a gear-head so anything car, or especially motorcycle-related gets a thumbs-up from me. How's she sound?

Thanks for the kind words Rand. I built a 4 stringer, then a 3 stringer in the summer of 2007, just to see if i could do it and what they would sound like. The next few months i collected boxes and started looking at how other people were building them. As i played them more and more i got hooked. Then in march of 2008 i started building more and more. Then i found this place and here i am. I am in san jose .

Thanks Rand for the Rodney tip, I honestly have so little time to spend, browsing that I see about 10% of what is out there, always in awe of the creativity that flows..I think the internet caused a renaissance in the arts..the ability to share, get inspired, hear, swap ideas......what a great time we live it! Will spend some time with looks for sure! I've yet to build anything myself....the recipient of huge kindness in receiving the two I play, both gifted, no stings attached, and I'm forever thankful for that ..my life has been a challenge, no funds for any luxuries,....I have a monster art box , and neck wood...maybe some day, I'll find the time...Teens and an 88 yr old Pa and a couple huge yards have me pretty hands full! LOL............music, became my therapy, after finding an old banjo at a swap meet.....
Cool to know about what you do there...will tkae time to get acquainted via your page...asap....out to weedwhip a hillside, just now! LOL
Laurie
Thanks too to the explanation......I was amazed at Chinese traditional stringed instruments,.. as seen around the time of the Olympics, I think....I saw an all female "orchestra" from two and one stringed played with bows...ato multi-stringed, that were played like hammer dulcimers, if memory serves me...

Hi All,

Last night I spent several hours looking through Rodney Fruits' extensive photo collection on his My Page on CBN. I can't believe what beautiful instruments he makes and I love the close-up detail photos he does that shows how he does dual piezo bridges and how he winds his own pickup coils.
I love his recent Don Carlos CBG. I recommend you all take a look at his photo collection. By the way, Rodney, how long have you been building CBGs? And where are you located in California?

Hi Laurie Lee.

Thus far, the only thing the Chinese have seen from me are canjos. And by "they", I mean mostly just family and friends of the family. I just started with CBGs this trip, and have learned a lot in a short time. Cigar boxes in China are rare, so I went the canjo route. I think they'll be more pleased with my CBGs. I'm sure they view me as an old eccentric foreigner and my canjos (and soon my CBGs) as a mere curiosities. I doubt my presence in China will have any impact with regard to music and instrument making. Part of the reason I am on this track of CBG building is to pick up some luthier skills, something China lacks. Their attitude is if it needs fixing, send it back to the factory. Their seems to be no music shops that offer repair services; perhaps a business opportunity I might explore. Guitars are so cheap there. I have two, one I bought for 200 RMB (about US$30) and a smaller one (more to my liking) for 400 RMB (about US$60). The larger one I've been stripping, though I may re-build it as a 3-stringer with 3 dual courses and tune it GDG or DAD. Prior to canjos and CBGs (and still today) I'm into ukes and stick dulcimers. Both are rare or non-existant in China (outside the Expat population).

-Rand.
