They are modeled on an Indian folk instrument, with a strip of thin timber(bamboo) up either side of the can meeting at the top. Here a machine head is fixed to one string. By squeezing the two strips while playing, a sliding effect is created apparently.

So now I'm going to make about a dozen 1 and 2 string canjos instead. I'll be using vegetable/fruit cans so they can take a beating. I worry about the strings cutting into the aluminum soda cans over time.
