Can Jo Consortium

The simplest little resonator instrument of all. Please add links to plans, photos of your canjos and ideas you've found that make the most of this diminutive instrument. (The image is a temporary placeholder, I'll replace it any day now!)

What a neat looking can-jo (in the photo). Have you seen an ektar? I have been saving cans to make some. They are modeled on an Indian folk instrument, with a strip of thin timber(bamboo) up either side of the can meeting at the top. Here a machine head is fixed to one string. By squeezing the two strips while playing, a sliding effect is created apparently.

I'm off to the recyling center for cans, we don't eat much in cans these days. But there is a peach one laying around that will be the prototype!

Might want some felt or fun foam on that, too! Post up a vid for us, Randy!

yes, I found a guy/gal who was making pickups in beer can lids, and they attach to the steel cans with magnets, I think. So you can put them on and off.

Aren't those awesome?!

Well, me too! I meant to bring a batch of 3-string guitars to my kids' summer camp, but that was getting pricey. So now I'm going to make about a dozen 1 and 2 string canjos instead. I'll be using vegetable/fruit cans so they can take a beating. I worry about the strings cutting into the aluminum soda cans over time.

It's about time!
I've not built one yet, but I might just do one today!
