nut slotting file

I got a cheapie set on E bay. Before that I made my own by flapper wheeling hack saw blades to the desired thickness. I should mention they were fine toothed blades and I cut them in half. I still use them to rough out a nut or saddle. Chuck

  • Welder tip cleaners come in different sizes and work great.
  • I bought a set on Ebay as well and they work well. I don't know what the name of them are, but I can post a pic for everyone to see if you want.... they came with a nut gauge and string spacing guide for several different instruments (bass, electric six and seven string, etc). I'm happy with the quality....
  • I love that idea. I was just trying to find something to slot a banjo 5th string bone nut, and was having some trouble. I'll have to see if I have some old feeler gauges around.
  • Sounds good Charles! I use a set of feeler gauges. You just clamp the whole set in a vice and roughly file teeth into them all in one go and you'll have every size you'l ever need (and some that are far too thin!) you can combine two together for thicker slots.
