Where do you get your cigar boxes???

I've been using using ebay to get my cigar boxes. It's the only place I seem to be able to get them. The americans seem to love their cigars. There is no cigar boxes for sale on ebay anywhere in Europe. !! Anyway, getting them from america isnt too bad because of the exchange rate. It's just the choice is quite limited. If anyone from Europe, preferably Ireland knows of anywhere to get cigar boxes leave a comment.

  • Hi All.

I was planning to get into box making after getting the hang of making good cigar box guitars. I spend most my time in China, and cigar boxes there are as rare as hen's teeth. So, I've been doing canjos, and when in the States, cigar box 3 & 4 stringers. I'm still not a skilled builder, but working my way in that direction. I think having a group on CBN that discusses how to build good boxes would be of interest to many CBN members, and may stimulate some of them to specialize in building good boxes. So, if any of you are also interested, let's star a group on making boxes. I do love the sound of cigar box instruments over my canjos.

  • I get mine at the discount tobacco stores, 2 bucks a piece. Talk to the people and show `em ones of your builds and they are happy to save `em for u.
  • Hi Dan

It's just an Idea, if you can't get an original box.
I like boxes with seals and brand names on them, gets some funny looks when I take them to sessions.
I played in a charity gig recently with a 3 stringer, done a 20 min slot, then had to leave to go to work,
next time I met the organiser, he said I should have told audience about my CBG, as no one had seen one before.
looking forward to making my tenor CBG, could start a trend in trad music, play some jigs and reels on it.

  • yeah there is a load that make their own boxes. Ted and Juju are 2 that do. I just like the idea of using a real cigar box. i like getting them in the post not know exactly how big they'll be. that's just my opinion. i've nothing against people who make their own. you're right in the sense that you can design the box how you want it. maybe i'll try it some day and see how it goes but for now i'm sticking to cigar boxes.

  • Hi Dan

If you make your own box, you have control over the size and wood you use, and you could decorate it with your own design. I think I will start a post on the main forum, get some opinions.
I think that some people already make their own boxes.

  • Hmmmmmmmmm, maybe I misunderstood this group. I'm Irish, but Irish/American. My Granny came over in the late 20's. However, I thought the idea behind a CBG was making a great instrument out of materials at hand. If that's a cigar box, fine, if it's a candy tin, or an old phone, or even a box you make yourself, it still can be a great instrument. Certainly cigar boxes are used in the U.S. because they are all over the place, I get them at a bunch of different places; a lot of times the tobacco store is just happy to get rid of them, they don't charge me. Other times I have to pay a buck or two. Still I do think the important thing is to make instruments out of what is easily available to you.

    Thanks,
    Rick
  • I dont really like the idea of making my own boxes because then it's not really a CBG it's just a guitar.
  • Hi Dan
I am Scottish, I love Irish folk music, my fave boy band are the Dubliners.
I was in Dublin this week, tried the cigar shops, could have got one for 5 euro's it was a bit small.
I got 8 when I was in Lanzarote, and my Son brought me 1 from Magaluf. I also got 2 for my 50th birhtday from a friend.
    I have plenty now.
I have no plans to sell any of my builds, so can't see me buying anymore.
How about making your own boxes.
My next build is a Irish tenor CBG for trad music.

Dan, I got 3 sets of guitar machine heads, and pick ups from Waltons music shop in Dublin, very reasonable price.
More that I can say for the drink prices in the Temple bar area.

  • Hey man. sorry i'm only getting back to your comment now. i've been up to me eyes. I found this women on ebay who sells lovely boxes. i bought a batch of 6 off her for i think about 30euro p&p included. they're a lovely wooden box. nice to work with and a nice size. i've also bought some other batches from other people. i wouldnt really be bothered buying single boxes. don't think it's worth the money. i know what ya mean about people charging for something they're not using and have no interest in but fuck it. they know we want them and are willing to pay. i was gonna go into some of the cigar shops with one of the CBGs i've made and offer them one to hang in their shop in exchange for their empty boxes if they want. i'll let you know how i get on.

I'm very new to this whole scene. I've recently been looking for cigar boxes to make a cigar box ukulele. I know absolutely _nothing_ about building an instrument, but I've decided to give it a shot!
I got a Balmoral cigars box from a newsagents in town yesterday. I'm going to head in today and see what the likes of Fox's and Peterson's on Grafton Street have (apparently the Decent Cigar Emporium keep all their boxes). The Balmoral box is pretty poorly made, but I think it will be useful for making my first uke, so I can make a real mess of it and not have ruined a really nice box. :-)
I also mailed a guy from an Irish cigar enthusiast group and asked him if he has any good tips. I'm kind of hoping that he will respond by saying "Well, I have a massive stockpile of empties at home - call over and help yourself"! :-)

Just out of interest, how much do you pay for your cigar boxes on ebay? I've been checking it out and it seems that a decent box is going to cost upwards of €10 with shipping. Call me a cheap student, but it seems a lot to pay for something that people are throwing out anyway!
