Hey everyone, summer seems to be round the corner and I've got a good feeling about this one after all the shitty summers we seem to have had for about the past 100 years or so. How about we organise a cbg open mike night somewhere? I know we're a little bit spread apart but the UK aint that big and my first build isn't too far from completion. What do folks think?

Boozy, I don't bother with all that malarky. I rub it down fine and rub in some Tung oil. Leave a day or two then light rub with fine wire wool and another coat. Leave again and buff up with cloth. Recently I've been giving them a distressed look with coats os paint sanded down partly. Just finish them in whatever way takes your fancy.

Hi - A quick question for all you CBG experts out there. Just started my first build and very pleasantly surprised how easy it has been so far to make the neck from a piece of mahogany. Never having done this before I expected it to be much more challenging to profile the neck but it's all gone swimmingly. Can anyone advise me on how to finish the neck please - does mahogany need grain filling, sealing and varnishing and all that malarky, or can I get decent results just by waxing it?

Have to agree with the old tobacconists thing - found one where I live and they just give the boxes away. Which is nice......

Im no expert Barrie, but that oak sounds ideal! I built a 4 stringer with 40mm x 20mm mahogany (your oak should be harder and stronger, depending on grain etc), and thinned off the headstock to about 12mm / 13mm... no problemo. 40mm is perfect for a 4 stringer with 10mm string spacing & 5mm either side. Good luck :o)

A quick question about 4 stringers. I have a length of 40mm x 20mm oak thats just looks like it should be a guitar neck, if fact im sure it asked me the other night after i finished a bottle of jamesons. If i make a 4 stringer will it be able to take the strain if i narrow one end for the head stock or will in need some extra support?

Barrie, that's the eternal question. Just look for old fashioned tobacconists. If all fails you can make your own plywood box and decorate it in whatever cool way you want. Or use an old biscuit/cookie or chaocalate tin. There's some great CBGs done this way.

Hi Trevor and welcome. Had a look at your photos, you've got some cool looking guitars. Like the strat scratchplate theme.
