Sources for boxes

Sources of boxes for UK builders and the difficulties of finding them is a topic that's cropped up quite a bit in different places, so I thought it might be useful to start a discussion strand on it. I've managed to scrounge cigar boxes free from a couple of sources (a cigar smoking friend and a local shop) but those supplies are very limited (the shop tells me they don't have many boxes these days because of the decline in smoking). So, recently, I've been looking around for alternatives and I found the following one which I thought might be worth sharing. There's a firm called Tomtom which sells cigars and posh coffee online. A Google search for cigar boxes turned up a section of the Tomtom site where they also sell spare empty cigar boxes. They're priced at £3.50, which didn't seem too bad to me (while it's possible to get boxes for less I've also heard higher figures talked of). Anyway, I thought I'd give it a try just to see whether they were any good. I've just got two really nice boxes, which came to £10.50 including the delivery. The website allows you to specify what type of box you want - I just gave some minimum dimensions and mentioned Cohiba Esplendidos as an example of what I like. They actually took the time to e-mail me and check a few possibilities to see if they suited my needs. In the end I left the final choice slightly to pot luck, which turned out very well on this occasion (in particular a beautiful Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios box which calls for something special). The relevant section of the Tomtom website is at: http://www.tomtom.co.uk/Catalogue/Product.aspx?Product=1431

  • I'm fortunate in having a local cigar shop with a ready supply of cigar boxes. Sometimes they don't have much in one week but if you pop back the next you have a job deciding what you don't want!

I pay about £2/3 a box which goes into a charity box, everyone's a winner!
  • no, I'm living in France by now
  • ok, found it,, are you in england,??

I'm not sure I understood correctly your sentence Paul, there are 67 photos in my forum photo album here for the
guitars currently for sale ; For the boxes I had no time to take pictures until now but I will do my best to take some today, though it will make no difference because I will be on travel until monday but ... ok :-) You can find details of my offer in a thread called "Classifieds and swaps" here at the Nation and I'm not trying to make big money on this you know :-)

  • yes, boxes are hard to come by, theres only one baccy shop left in my area, and no cigar boxes, the ebay ones are a bit expensive, i did bite the bullet and bought a few, just so i could make a traditional cbg, but for my first giutar i used an old fishing box i made when i was at school, (40 years ago) as a practice piece, also bought a wine bottle box and a cutlery box off ebay to make a few more guitars, before i attempt hacking the cigar boxes to bit's, my brothers son is in usa at collage, so i might see if he'll ship me over a few boxes, have to see what the shipping works out at first though,
  • Hi everyone :-)

You can find here at http://www.meyer-boxes.de
all sorts of boxes, and of course cigar boxes, because they are one of the main company whom build theses
    boxes for tobacco companies :D

The website is french or german so far I have not seen english translation but you can phone or write them
emails and I'm pretty sure they can speak a lot of languages including spanish chinese and english :)

You can order small or large quantities of boxes, and they have absolutely all sorts of boxes that you are
used to deal with from tobaccos. When you order you can also chose which type of finnish you want, vernish
etc.. and they can even apply your own logo, they don't really care you are not a tobacco company...

so why not create your own brand name cigar box guitars ? select a type box, size, a finnish, send a logo
and you will receive at home tabac boxes branded at your own name ! :D

    Enjoy !
  • I was in Solihull yesterday and popped into the tobacconists there asking after boxes. They had none and told me that they save them all for somebody anyway. So which of you lot is it? I hope it is for a CBG maker and not some mad person who just stores stuff in them.
I found a wine box (would have held 6 bottles) in my outhouse today though that I'd forgot I had. Wondering about making something with that perhaps, but perhaps I need to head over to wineboxnation to discuss that.
  • There's lots on the UK Ebay site at the moment. A bit expensive but if you're desperate ........
