I've been trying to use the slide but just canna make it work.
as you may know I had frets fitted and this seem to interfering.
so it look like I'm going to have to use my fingers.
most you tubes instructions use's slides as fingers.
is there any tutorials on here??

yes he does seem a little more clearer on both use of strings and plectrum.
the problem at the mo is getting the coordination right with string and plectrum.
trying to play Shane Speals blues licks.I don't know if that a little hard for a beginner?
I have to wear in ear phones to hear clearly as I'm partially tone deaf.
been playing or trying to play for about 3/4 hour now and my 3 fingers fingers are stinging like mad and looking rather sore.once I've built up a good skin..callus or some thing they call it? I should be ok I hope
I'm not bothering with the slide on the cbg that I bought off slowpaw.
I've been using ma fingers to shane speal's advice on you tube and so far so good.
what I'm not so keen is the sound ,a bit tinny for me.
so I will change the strings to 42,32,24 gauge,they should give a tone more to my liking.
beside string gauges do having pick up make the difference in sounds.bought one off c/bonejohn a BC Rich singlecoil pickup suppose to give a nice warm sound.
I suppose any wound pickups would be better than piezo?
You'll find that singlecoil pickup will give you a lot warmer more controllable sound than the piezo..generally electro magnetic p'ups will do that for you.

ok my 2 peneth you don't need super high action chances are you are pushing down on the string as if you were trying to fret it . you don't need to do this just a touch is enough.
I play cbg and regular 6 strings on the slide and my action is not high yes a bit higher than normal but still very playable so I can fret notes as normal . you mention string gauges and not being able to get it in tune? remember that all these tuning are in essence the same be it D'A'D / the most common or BFB it doesn't mater the incriments are the same .I use my tuner in cromactic mode and not set for guitar /bass or violin don't know about your tuner but on mine this is indicated by a little c on the screen as long as the needle is in the middle on the note you require don't matter what colour it is red green pink whatever .
using heavy guage strings will increase the tension on the neck and thus in all probability raise your action but if you wish to also fret notes its gonna hurt your fingers especially as I understand you are a beginner I wouldn't recommend that.
stick with the gauge you have its a good starting point get used to the feel of the strings stick with it its all about feel
i usually make guitars wth the beginner n mind so 32 24 17 is a compromise, change the strings for thicker ones if you wishbut it will.be a little harder to fret as they will be a little tighter, sliding will.be a little easier but try to get used to how it is before changing, there are online tuners available, don tighten them.up toohigh!
when I got the cbg the string were to soft so to speak.
now dont get me wrong steve ,I'm not knocking your set up.
I've still got a lot to learn.
the strings 32g,24g and 16g now I don't know what difference these strings make or indeed others.
it could be that I've set it up wrong on my tuner.
its an old one that I bought years ago.its an Korg chromatic ca- 30.
now what gets me is the HZ ,CAL UP AND DOWN so what do I need this set on as it seem to alter the setting of cords or notes if I set it higher and lower.
so like a bright spark I just set the gdg with out thinking blah blah so I might have set it wrong.
on the gauge it has two symbols b red . green . # red.
and I'm not going to give up.
I'm sure once the penny dropped I'll get the hang of it.
I think also having a smaller 10amp may not be helping me in hearing the sound clearly even though I've got head phones on.
may I should try the in the ear phones.

John, ma man, seems you're fretting over slides, and not sliding over frets. Ah know this statement is not helpful, but ya gotta admit its quite clever and a propos (whatever THAT means). ;)
On a serious note, watch a few vids, raise yer action, as Yellowbelly says, and don't try to hard. It (slide) will come eventually , and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about :)
