Fret Spacing

Tossing around ideas for a Tenor build. One thing that has me a little puzzled in these early stages is fret spacing. Do Tenors have the same fret spacing as a regular guitar neck? I thought they did…Continue

(I'd really rather build 15" . . .)

Mark,
You better not let Diane hear you talking like that. All of hers are 19" scales.

My current build started out to be a tenor, but with one thing and another (OK, I didn't measure right...) I ended up with a usable scale length of only 18.5 inches.
Puts it in the baritone-uke range...
Still, It'll have four strings, a bolt-on neck, and so forth; it's almost done.

Keeping the classical music in mind...if you tune CGDA, you have plenty of viola and cello music to pick from.

DGBE is what i use but I am thinking on trying something new. I like the blues, but was raised on classical music; which i believe has influenced my style.

Colin,
Do you tune CGDA or the "Chicago" DGBE...or I hear some people go with GDAE? I like the "open" voicings of the chords in CGDA. What kind of music do you play on yours? (That last question is open to anyone)

sure does ben, not sure on the stella's scale length i'll have to check. I was thinking cocobola pressed between oak or maple. The stella is in bad shape; road trip not wise.

Hey Colin,
Since you asked for hints...I think you should send me your Stella for me to review...Copying the Stella's scale length is probably a good idea if its around 23". My only other advice would be to use a laminated neck. I prefer 1/4" pieces of oak. It gave me an extremely stable neck that has zero bow to it. If you tune those 4 strings up to CGDA though, there's quite a bit of tension. Hope this helps...

hello, I am going to make my first electric cbg a tenor. Thinking on copying the scale on my 60's stella tenor. Any helpful hints? Thanks.

I'm glad this group cropped up. My favorite CBG I've made so far was a Tenor. It might have something to do with it being the best sounding acoustic one that I've built too. I made it the common 23" scale and it is tuned CGDA (also like a viola since we're comparing tons of instruments here). Neko Case, among others, tunes her Tenors in "Chicago Tuning" - like the top 4 strings of a standard guitar - DGBE. While we're in that tuning...I believe that is the standard tuning for baritone ukes. Now, while we're on bari ukes, my factory-made bari uke case fits my Tenor CBG perfectly! I don't know if its worth tracking a case down but this one fell into my lap and I love it. Finally, if anyone wants to hear a sample of my Tenor, take a listen to "Fishin' Hole" on my page. The "chucks" are the tenor.
