Tenor Guitar (cbg)

Fret Spacing

Tossing around ideas for a Tenor build. One thing that has me a little puzzled in these early stages is fret spacing. Do Tenors have the same fret spacing as a regular guitar neck? I thought they did…Continue

Hey Leroy, I'm not up on my ukes so could you tell me why this falls into the tenor guitar category instead of the baritone uke category? I know that Chicago tuning on a tenor is Dgbe. But isn't that baritone uke too? It looked like this had nylon strings on it. Is there a difference between tenor guitar and baritone uke scale lengths?

I built this a few years ago. It's not technically a CBG, but has the appeal. I made it from a western red cedar dog eared fence board I bought at my local hardware store. It has a 23" scale and is tuned DGBE (top 4 strings of a standard guitar). It has the tone of a fine classical guitar.

Here are some more photos and short explanations.

I'm using the La Bella Tenor Guitar strings and like them. They have a nice bright/jangly sound. They are: C - .027, G - .020, D - .013, and A - .009

What gauge (size) of strings are y'all using when you make a tenor CBG

Hey Vince,
I've got to disagree with you on that last comment. I may be a young guy myself but I know that Tenor Guitars were invented to give the Tenor Banjo player a cross over instrument. At the time, Banjo was king but the guitar was becoming more and more popular. The Tenor guitar gave these banjo players a "second life" in guitar music. Since the Banjo was tuned CGDA (like a viola) the Guitar was tuned that way too. That's at least how I understand it to have happened on the West side of the Atlantic. I am not sure, but I think that in Europe the tradition tends to be more towards the GDAE tuning. I may be mistaken there though. Out of curiosity, how old are these older folks you're talking about and what's their background? I would love to know more about it.

Most of the older folks who played 4 string tenor guitars tuned them to, GDAE. This is the same as mandolin or fiddle.

Wow! great group. My next build is going to be a wooden salad bowl tenor guitar, and this group is rich is information. Thanks all.

tenor scales typically run from 22 to 23 inches.
viola tuning is standard.
another tuning that makes old mountain tunes so easy is GDGD.
