Just a thought..

So I was in a local "cheap" shop yesterday looking about for 'stuff' and noticed small cat/dog bowls.. I have saw them used as resonators so picked one up and flicked the bottom to hear the 'boing'.. Inspiration struck me and I grabbed out my mobile phone.. Switched on my guitar tuner app and got a reading.. Quarter tone away from a C.. Next bowl.. Closer.. I tried 6 until I hit one by accident spot on a D.. Result. I hope it makes a difference to my build when I use it.. Techniques cost nothing.

Ah Ok, yeah I have a bunch of those, not as long as I need. Maybe I'll see if I can mate some standoffs or something to regular tuner cogs. Some have those rounded square bottoms and some are just ribbed.

I checked -gitty has them-they're called
Parlor style economy tuners. They have metal shafts with 2 holes in them for mounting options

Like the ones for nylon strung, or on those 12 string Rics?

The longest I know of are for horizontal mounting-they have two holes on each post-Gitty might have them

Anyone got any sources for extra long machine heads, if such a thing exists, something that can be used through a 1" piece of wood at least?

I used an old porch rail and a license plate for mine, see my avatar / profile pic thingy.

Those clip on acoustic pickups can also be used as the bridge.

Hello all. I've been on here for a coupla' years, but I overlooked this group.

Saving money is always great, but ingenuity in using unexpected parts and components is also a great way to add interest to instruments offered for sale.

Double-shot shot glasses make good slides; neckties make good straps; stairway balusters make good canjo necks; drill small holes in eye bolts to make tuning pins. It adds to the appeal of the item if the improvisation is obvious but the instrument still plays well.

Ideas? (That I can steal from you!)

When you are ready to glue the pieces together you'll need a few clamps-the more you build the more you realize you can never have enough clamps! I would glue up groups of 2-3 pieces at a time and then glue those pieces together. Glueing all pieces all at once could be tough

Clamps on the table?

It's got a shield and a bar, and I have a couple of 2" C-clamps, I'm not too wood savvy.
