Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

That's an impressive collection Duck. I have caught the CBG bug too and have already got plans for when the weather improves.
Welcome to the Nation, Jack. Lots of good therapy here. It's hard to be depressed when you string one of these things up, hear it sing for the first time and realize that you built it with your own hands. You just have to be careful, building CBGs can become so much fun that you end up with the problem of finding somewhere to put them. I have managed to fill up our hall and my wife doesn't seem to mind, (so far). It's really not addictive, you just don't want to stop building once you start because every one is different and you will want to collect the whole set.
Hello there.
I suffered a stroke October 2012 and again in July 2014. Each stroke left me with a whole host of legacy health problems which I am slowly coming to terms with.
I started to use woodworking projects as a form of exercise for my right hand and shoulder. I also found that making and uploading videos of my progress to be effective against the black depression that stroke victims often suffer.
I built my first CBG mainly as a woodworking project that would be challenging but still achievable. Since then, I have spent many happy hours "making noise" and excising my right thumb and forefinger while tweaking the guitar using tips found here and on YouTube.
Thank you to all the wonderfully, talented and generous people who share their passion and skill.
Very best regards
O'wheelie
Welcome Tom Sherman, there are a bunch of fine people here on the nation. Lots going on all the time.
Hi all, thought it time to introduce myself, been lurking around here for the better part of two weeks. Great info and guidelines here seems like a great bunch too. I am gathering the necessary pieces to build my first CBG, looking forward to it and learning to play the darned thing. Have tried to play guitar before but could not seem to get a grip on it to many distractions, things are slowing down and maybe now I can. Look forward to seeing where this leads. Love the talent here some good players and builders.
Greetings from west-central Florida.
Got the idea of CBGs from my brother. Started reading about and looking at pics of CBGs. Love the ideas. Love the sound. Love this forum!
I've built two 3-stringers, a 2-string weedwacker line bass, a great diddley bow and a 'proof of concept' cello-ish somethingorother. Have been able to get some really nice boxes. Someone else said each build has its own mojo. Couldn't agree more. I'll take a box, look at it, smell it, feel it, let it talk to me...I know it sounds cheesy... Got a couple more in the works, including a beautiful Romeo box 3-string for my guitarist-in-a-signed-metal-band son..yep this one will be special.
Kinda long-winded...just wanted to let everyone know I've got the bug!
Welcome, Jon, Trapper, Ralph & William. This is a friendly and playful group. lots of photos and videos so enjoy and ask questions and add your builds and playing.
