Hi everybody,
I'm glad to have found this site! My CBG history is that I wanted to play guitar, but 6 strings I thought would be exagerated. So I began to build my own. I still can't play but still I enjoy building... www.klangbox.net
Currently I'm trying to build my own pups.

Greetings from Vienna, Austria!

Hi all!
My name is Jeff, and like so many here, I also am struggleing with CBG addiction. I'm 45, most of those years I lived just north of Shane in PA, now I've moved to Tallahassee Fl to escape those cold winters, and I dont miss the snow at all. I just built my first CBG with the guidance of this website and I am pleased with how it turned out, the sound quality is great both acoustic and plugged in, (I have some pics on my page)
I've been picking at the 6 string for years, and woodworking has always been a hobby of mine so to combine the two seems a natural progression, and a great creative outlet.
anyway I really enjoy reading here, and seeing all the original and unique projects goin on, lotsa talented folks here, and I'll probably be participating more, as I feel I have a few more builds ahead of me .

Howdy folks. I'm Dan. Midwestern boy stuck in California. Filmmaker, music lover, guitar & uke player. First heard cigar box instruments on Tom Waits records. Especially love his use of cigar box banjo on the song "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone (2004). Recently I've decided I want to build an oil can guitar, so I've come here for tips from more experienced builders as I feel my way through my first homemade guitar. I've got a gallon oil can, some poplar boards, and the cheapest hardware and electronics I could find. Now all I need is some free time and a bit of luck! Looking forward to talking to folks around here.

Hello..
i'm zandi z, transplanted from the Caribbean( Panama Canal Zone) to the High Plains of NE NewMexico via New Orleans and Calif.
in the 80s i found a Dixie BanjoUke in a toy bin at a Salvation Army store---$.75---- didn't know what it was, but i sensed it was not just a toy.

20+years later i was loaned a small-sized electric guitar which a friend thought i could learn to play. i did, one string at a time...still not so good at chords, but sure do have fun letting my fingers fly up and down the fretboard to my fave cds.
the guitar is heavy, tho, so thought to refurbish the Dixie as a more portable practice instrument.

i ended up at a youtube video of a young kid playing one...i was tickled.
clicked on Johnny MacNair's( Red Dog Guitars) video which was next...i was enchanted !!!
My partner and i are now proud, happy owners of one of his creations...
plugged, unplugged, big amp, Honeytone, it never dissapoints...even with us 'novice players'.... what a sound!!! ... the New Orleans i remember.

JMs page led to the 3-string page which led to you all, CBN.

anyway, that was Halloween..by Thanksgiving i had more than a hundred boxes, lots of sticks and a half dozen instruments of varying sizes started.

i now spend my days reading CBN posts, and listening to and watching your videos --when i'm not making sawdust, that is.

Y'all have inspired me. entertained, tickled, and informed me...you are AWESOME!!!! i have not had this much FUN-FUN since i was a teenager half a century ago... and i consider i've had a great life!!!

I am soooo impressed with your music, artistry, and cheerful helpfulness !!!!
i'm so relieved that so many of you feel as 'addicted' to CBGs as i do.

Johnny, Shane, THANK YOU !!!
and thank you--- all the rest of you---- wherever in the world you are...
real, simple, JOY is a treasure beyond measure.
y'all inspire it with what you are doing....zan

Hello... Marc Ian here.
Cigar smoker with no musical talent that I know of -- other than the fact that I love music.
Discovered CBGs while looking for something that I could do with my collection of cigar boxes. Landed on John McNair's site and heard him play some delta blues like I haven't heard them played in 20 yrs! In researching how to build my own, I came across this site and have been lurking for the past few weeks. Lurking and drooling and learning and drooling... :0

Just started my first build about a week ago, after spending several weeks learning what I could about guitars (I knew absolutely nothing). I hope to learn to play after I get through building my own CBG. But first I have to make two 3-string'ers for my lil boys (hope to have them made by Christmas) and in the process get some much needed experience before I start on a 4-string for myself.

Have really enjoyed my time here... lots of resources and people trying to help each other out... Does the mind good to see and be apart of such things.

Aloha :-)
My name is Charlie. I currently live in Haliimaile Hawaii on the island of Maui.
I am originally from the Fingerlakes region of upstate New York. I have been playing guitar and harmonica since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I picked up the banjo a couple years ago and it came to me pretty quick because of my finger style guitar picking experience. I have been tinkering with the ukulele lately. I love music and "things with strings". I stumbled accross this site by accident (I'm so glad I did), and it has inspired me to build my own "String Things". Thank you Shane for this wonderful website. I would also like to thank all you folks for shareing youre wisdom and talent.

Introducing myself as well! I'm Jason, I live in Hanover, PA - a detail that Shawn immediately zoned in when welcoming me to the site. I've been mainly a lap-style resophonic guitar player for the past 5 years, the last 2 of which have been in serious study. Less than a week ago, I'd never heard of CBG until seeing Keni Lee Burgess's YouTube video series (I'm beginning to learn bottleneck, a natural progression from working with a steel). I'm sure I'll try my hand at building a few while I learn my way around the fingerboard and play something worth hearing. ;)

Hello,......in Introducing myself,.....I'm Laurie, I live out in California, near where gold was discovered many years ago.........I play a Daddy Mojo 2 string reso style i bought about 3 years ago now, purchase on ebay, and another a 4 string that was a gracious gift from a youtube friend Railroad Don--who is up in Canada. I play lap steel guitar mostly (A national) but love my cigar box guitars, one of which was modified to play lap slide style, and Don's model (only the 7th) he has produced , which was custom built with a taller nut, to play intentionally in the lap steel slide manner. I love making things, and hope one day to try my hand at building too, so thought I'd better join up here....I have no means to buy the beauties I see here and there, so I imagine building will be a solution, for me, if I'm ever successful, in that direction..:-) Cheers from me, and the ghosts of the 49ers, out west;-) Laurie

Hi all.

I am middle age man who not gonna grow up ever :)

well ... i looking from Ebay last spring, Bo Diddley´s famous "box" guitar and then i see ChickenboneJohns CBG´s ... few times i wondering that and next i order from him 3 - string fretless CBG with Monte Cristo Box.

... few times later i found also Red Dog .. they looks so nice and because i am litle grazy ... i buy one 4 -string CBG from John M.

Bill Jehle send me "How to build a guitar etc..." DVD and earlier Bill also recommend to me that Red Dog and Daddy Mojo CBG´s ... so now i have both and one DM is ordered again.

Last summer i sell that my first fretles 3-string CBG to Roger B. (lives in Porvoo, Finland).

Three of my own self made CBG is ready, but one was not so good at i don´t wanna sell it, so i give it to my son.

So lot is happend ... in a short of time. What next :)

Now two project is allmost ready , 3-string "Winnie the Pooh" and 4-string "Punch" with pietzo and minihumbucker.
