Just finished my 1st freeless acoustic CBG, based on the #Glenn Watt design. 31inch neck, 25inch scale, 42/32/24 gauge strings. Sycamore neck and a 200mm x 180mm x 45mm box made from 7mm ply. Neck…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

i want to thank all of you. i found a lot of great info on here after getting bit by cbg bug. i'm happy w\my first attempt. not too shabby. i tried to keep it as primitive as possible. i did buy machine heads (pawn shop, $1/piece!!) and strings (overpriced guitar shop). the next one (or dozen) i make will definitely get more complicated. this one plays better than i expected. even my shoddy fret job is pretty close to true. i have no tools. made this with a wood file, screwdriver, drill, and a dull hacksaw. i strung it before i fretted and plotted each tone out with an online tuner by ear. also used one of those fret calculators online where you input the nut-to-bridge distance. as you guys know, there are boatload of variables on these. i didn't glue my lid down just yet. just used some small brass screws. i think i want to file down the neck so that only about an inch on either end is glued to the lid. i have a bunch of ideas on how to counter the tension some but i'm not sure which i'll try. or if i'll just leave it. in any event, thanks again for all the info.

Hey guys! I'm new to cbg's, but not anywhere near being new to music. As far as strings go, I play upright and electric bass, guitar, and a little fiddle, banjo, madolin. I'd like to build a cbg. Any advice on getting started?

Hello everyone! My real name is Gábor Vajda and I am from Hungary. As you may tell I am a Van Halen fan and I own guitars like a Kramer Baretta and an Explorer-shaped no-name guitar that I've converted to a black&white version of the infamous 'Shark' guitar. I also had another project guitar - a cheap but great quality - Strat-copy that started out as an Yngwie Malmsteen-project with a scalloped neck then I painted it up as the 'Frankenstein'. It could not be tuned well or anything, it was for the sake of the project. After I gave the pickups and springs to friends, I had it lying around for literally years. After accidentally stumbled upon Seasick Steve I realized I could easily convert it to a diddley bow as I was really into slide guitar stuff as well. Thus I created a Van Halen and Malmsteen look-a-like one string guitar I spend great time with.

Hey there CigarboxNation,
If you couldn't tell, my names Nate. I'm brand new to CBGs and I've never really known too much about handy work, but I've always been good at doing projects and things when I've tried. The primary reason I've joined is to get a physics project out of the way, and the guys at my local cigar shop told me this is the place to be. I'll be updating pictures of my current project as I finish up and I'm open to any advice you guys have for me.

Welcome aboard Leanna. I'm very new to the CBG thing, but it fits well with my love for the blues, and an interest in creating functional art. I've finished a few guitars, and just last week finished my first bass, which I'll post photos of soon. Where and when are the blues fest which you reference? I live in Ohio and would like to connect with other mid-western builders.

I like doing things and keeping busy. I saw the site and now a new hobby. I downloaded photos of my first build today and want to say thanks to CBN - It is a grate site and I have picked up a lot of great info here. I want to personaly thank everyone for the tips and tricks. I have my 4 string CBG & CBA completed and now working on headless a bass. Can't play much just been learning to play a 6 string over the past year. But seems like I heard somewhere on this site that every box has it's on music. That seems to be true, cus to me when I pluck and slide on this 4 string with conventional tuning all kinds of goodness comes out to me. Guess that is what counts. Some day I won't break strings and get the open tuning down. So -- Thanks again to all you CBG folks out there.--TIGGER!!

Hey there Nation, My name is Joe and I'm currently living in Memphis, TN. I was looking for a left handed acoustic when I found a left handed Red Dog. I had no idea what it was and started checking out CBG's. It took about an hour and I was hooked. I will have one in about a month, then I just need to learn how to play. Have found some incredible new artist that are playing the stuff that I have been looking for, Hollowbelly for one. Cheers, and if anyone is in or near Memphis you know what to do.

Hola!

Hey all - big time fan of all things music. I play fingerstyle guitar, slide on tricone, and I use to rock a little as well lol

I have been itching to build an instrument for a couple of years (have a couple of books) but have never taken the plunge so to speak. But CBG's look pretty accessible and darn cool so I've ordered a couple of cigar boxes from ebay - I have some wood and parts and a couple of tools and I'm going to take a run at it :)

Anywho - great site. I've learned a ton just reading from all these masters here - so I know I'm in good hands.
